Caroline Vains

(Australia)

Dr Caroline Vains is an interdisciplinary practitioner working across spatial, social, installation, event, performance & urban intervention design. She has a PhD in Performance Studies (Monash University), a Master of Architecture (RMIT University) & Bachelor of Interior Design hons (RMIT). She lectures in RMIT’s School of Architecture & Design (Interior Design Hons program). Her practice brings design & performance together to investigate relationships between people & the built environment in contemporary cities, with a particular focus on the city as an ‘urban interior’ & access to public space. In these investigations she uses body mapping, performative interventions, drawing & model making. Increasingly, her work seeks to bring the social (events-activities) & the spatial (design-scenography) together in urban interventions that foster inclusive communities & social cohesion in the context of migration and other marginalised communities.
