Daniella Mooney ( South Africa )

Extending limbs / making moves, or, The stones we carry, is a project realised by the artist Daniella Mooney in her residency studio at ZK/U over the months of August and September 2021.

During this period Mooney worked on an installation in her living space which incorporated using found cobblestone from the surrounding neighbourhood and occasionally further to pave an area of her studio. The all-consuming process of sourcing the stone involved the task of exploring neighbourhood streets in search of the out of place and disrupted natural order of the pavement. With these collected stone units, she washed and carefully arranged them in her living space. Here, creating a stone circle and site for exploring deeper questions around not only her own, but a more collective relationship to the ever ubiquitous and enduring material of stone. This is an ongoing and experimental project around an attempted deeper understanding into how information is potentially encoded, stored, and retrieved in a material like stone, and in particular, through the artists own body. Mooney explores how this unique relationship finds personal expression, through looking, moving, feeling and touching.
