Martin Krafft ( United States )

In an effort to test the bounds of expected interactions between strangers, Martin Krafft will be reading Rainer Marie Rilke’s poem, “Wenn etwas mir vom Fenster fällt,” to 1000 strangers throughout the city of Berlin. He will ask participants if they would like to hear a Rilke poem, in German or English, then see what conversations can be sparked by the reading. At a time when pluralistic democratic societies are fraying at the seams, and even our minds have been commodified ad nauseum, this project is Krafft’s attempt to offer a creative, non-financial experience, a space for reflection, for rapture, for connection, however fleeting. As the project progresses, he will invite others to share in the act of reading, spawning a web of poetic engagement across the city.
