Speisekino Moabit 2017 #18 / Food & Footage

∆ Film: Street Beats - Global Cities in Hip Hop Music Clips

Of all music genres, hip hop has been the most grounded in place and space. MCs often base their identity on the “hood” they hail from or have chosen as a home, and their lyrics become rhyming reportage about life on the streets of their town. This is echoed in the music clips accompanying these tracks. Location shooting in actual urban settings is not only cheaper and faster, it contributes to the desired image of “realness” and community connection.

This program is a journey into sound and vision with clips made between 1982 and 2017 and shot in New York, Los Angeles, Berlin, Kiev, Budapest, Belgrade, Istanbul, Accra, Liberec, London and other cities. An urban audiovisual mixtape featuring Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, FOKN Boys, Beastie Boys, Sido & Bushido, Romano, K.I.Z., Burial, N.W.A., 2pac and others.
