Speisekino Moabit 2013 #11

At the source of cinema

For example Moabit: this is where the inventors, the pioneers went in 1895 - this is where they found their “attractions”, their first “stars”. Those came from the varietes and revues, the entertainment halls and the operetta.

For example the brothers Skladanowsky from Pankow near Berlin: Not only did they film the Wintergarten or the Apollo-Theatre on Friedrichstrasse, they also shot in Moabit. In the garden of the former City-Theatre Alt-Moabit, that later on became known as the Hansa-Theatre and the Filmpalast Hansa, they filmed “Acrobatic family Grunato” and “Wrestling match of Grainer and Sandow” - two very short movies that they presented at the Wintergarten the 1st of November 1895.

That day is this then marked as the day Cinema was invented in Germany. At that time the Bioscop-program of the Skladanowskys was an attraction. Soon others came into the light: the brothers Lumière in Paris, Edison in the USA, Oskar Messter mostly in Berlin, all of them pioneers of the cinema that combined invention with a sense for business. Max Skladanowsky’s request for a credit was rejected by Deutsche Bank. His invention was described as a “Fantasy” by his banker …

Several movies and a few introductory words by Michael Hanisch will bring us to remember that time and its pioneers: The very short movies of the “Wintergartenprogramm” of the brothers Skladanowsky, a view words by the daughter Lucie Hürgen-Skladanowsky (1904-2001) - from the documentary „Die Wiege des boxenden Känguruhs“, 1987 by Günter Meyer - and a homage by Wim Wenders who produced it in 1995, exactly 100 years after the offspring of cinema in Berlin.

The house Alt-Moabit 45-47 has a long history. After the City-Theatre and the Hansa-Theatre the “Kultur Café Restaurant Hafis” is now located there. As part of the Speisekino Moabit you may try the persian 5-Euro-Menu made by them.
