Orient Heat is a program for a summer night in August featuring a selection of video artists from Beirut curated by Franziska Pierwoss & Siska for Speisekino.

The different videos are dealing with high temperature, politics, first sex and long journeys. Names like Acapulco and Tabarja recall places where palm trees grow, houses were modern and swimming pools are blue.

Franziska Pierwoss (Germany) & Siska (Lebanon) are two visual artists working in installation, film and performance. Together they created the Kino Projekt, a temporary cinema screening amateur Super 8 films and artist's video works. The
project was first shown in Beirut and has since travelled to Minneapolis, Naples, and
Zürich.

Videos by Wael Noureddine, Karine Wehbe & Nadim Tabet, Marwa Arsanios and
Siska.

E.D.L / SISKA / 21 MIN / SUPER 8 ON VIDEO / 2011
Lost in time and translation, images transport us on a journey behind the modernist facade of Beirut’s electricity building. The images shot on super 8 are accompanied by droning noises reminiscent of experimental, electronic sounds of the 1950's and 60s. The video portrays Lebanon’s National Electricity building as an homage to a once modernist project linked to the very construction of Lebanon’s modern state. Till today Beirut suffers from a power cut of three hours a day, outside of the capital up to 8 hours per 24, thus this building is a highly politicized subject. The question of who is in control of the actual power switch is reflecting the confessional divisions of Lebanon in general and has recently made the building the aim of violent protests.

I'VE HEARD 3 STORIES / MARWA ARSANIOS / 12 MIN / VIDEO / 2009
I’ve heard 3 stories is a video and 2D animation that brings together different stories on the chalet Raja Saab also known as Acapulco, attempting to investigate and restage the disappearance of a dancer from the Crazy Horse Saloon of Beirut.

SUMMER 91 / KARINE WEHBE & NADIM TABET/ 20 MIN / HD / 2014
A young woman and a young man each gave their version of a story they lived together while we see images of where this story took place: a seaside resort on the Lebanese coast.

A FILM FAR BEYOND GOD / WAEL NOUREDDINE / 39MIN / 35MM on VIDEO /2008
Leaving Lebanon, where his other films were shot, for Yemen, he warns us that this journey represents a return to the origins of polytheism long before the establishment of Islam. In a return to ancient Arab divinities worshipped long ago the film assembles shots, cuts or overexposure, faces and views of the desert.
