Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's early opera Camacho's Wedding takes us through the highs and lows of love, friendship, doubt, and certainty. But there's one thing it doesn't lead to: Camacho's wedding. And that's exactly how opera should be—a place of the unexpected, open to people looking for undiscovered treasures and adventures, inner journeys, or a change of pace.
Even 200 years after the opera was completed by the 16-year-old Mendelssohn, it remains one of the composer's least performed works. Unjustly so. In a dramaturgically streamlined version lasting about an hour, Privatoper breathes new life into the work.
