Pia Lanzinger: Little Big Cha(lle)nges

Talks on Curatorial Practice
30 JANUARY 2026 / 17:00
ZK/U BerlinSiemensstr. 27, 10551, Berlin, Germany
Now that art has successfully fought for the right to intervene in social affairs, the focus of Pia Lanzinger's work is on using this new freedom for creative formats and not letting up in terms of the radicalism implied.
One expression of this insistence can be to concretise civic engagement in a way that brings the major challenges to mind, rearranges them and responds to them in surprising ways. By focusing attention on specific actors and conflicts on a small scale, perspectives, practices and attitudes can be set in motion; ultimately, these projects also aim to publicly standing up for issues that are unjustly overlooked on a larger scale. This involves seeking out opportunities and chances to actively perceive what has been neglected until now.
For 30 years, Pia Lanzinger has been realising artistic projects in various contexts and countries. They focus on pressing questions concerning a sustainable democratic basis and the free participation of many in a world shaped by media and neoliberalism – and respond to them with artistic forms of participation that shed new light on the importance of civil action and questions of social justice.
Pia Lanzinger is an artist based in Berlin. International exhibition activities, working and project scholarships as well as residencies; activities as a lecturer in academies and universities, as a jury member and as a curator of exhibitions in art institutions and in the public space.
From 2020 to 2022, Pia Lanzinger implemented the project ‘Un jeu pour notre place’ in various cities in Algeria. This oversized board game depicts in a grid pattern the rules that determine and restrict the opportunities available to women in Algeria. The exchange of experiences associated with this is then also a first step towards active change for the participants.
