OPENHAUS January

(c) Stephen Wilks, 2019

ZK/U BerlinSiemensstr. 27, 10551, Berlin, Germany

Our next OPENHAUS on January 23rd 2020 will be a part of Vorspiel, organized by transmediale and CTM.

The OPENHAUS is a recurring format where the doors of the ZK/U residency open and gives the public a chance to discover the residents’ artistic projects, discuss and exchange directly with them. Vorspiel has a rich program consisting of exhibitions and a diversity of events with over 50 project spaces and independent cultural actors participating.

For this edition of Vorspiel, residents in ZK/U will engage with the conceptual framework around “networks”. Some of them will deal with human/non-human relations through installation and video art, highlighting the commonalities in terms of shared space and physical features. Archives and their different forms will be another issue on the agenda. Through personal flanerie experiments that create an anarchive to overcome the geographical, political, and historical discourses related to the area, or by interactive performances that invite the audience to gather around a certain kind of memory in a collective moment of sharing, the artists will try to link the personal with the public. More works will be putting the issues of both individual and collective engagement with the contemporary world to the table. Flash mob performances will bring together a diverse public of Berlin in an attempt toward a togetherness of catharsis. With video and sound installations elaborating on personal struggles with the fast contemporary pace and its impacts, and ready-made works engaging with the modern human as a consumer creature, the artists will invite the audience to interact with the limitless meanings of network.

Before the start of the OPENHAUS, the book launch of our own publication following up the Hacking Urban Furniture project will take place at 6 p.m. More information will follow shortly.

SAY NO TO DRUGS

<Say No To Drugs>(2019~) conceives the body as a battlefield in between colonization and de- colonization. And it welcomes spectators joining the struggle.

David Clark

THE CINEMA OF SWEAT

This three-screen projection piece is a collage of glitchy iPhone video and found footage. The work alludes to the kinds of slippages and half-understandings that can emerge from a chance encounter with an expert language, like the dream you would have if you fell asleep at a conference on Quantum Mechanics.

Eric Andersson

SOMEDAY SOMEONE WILL HELP ME

In Berlin two completely different groups of animals, humans and firebugs, share the same resources. In this open interactional space there are always connections yet to be made, relations which may or may not be accomplished. The actions taking place so far can only be seen as encounters, rather than a recognition. Every thought becomes an attack, changes are taking place under the surface. Everything is not what it seems here, and it will not always continue like this.

Marcos Vidal Font

SENSIBLE ENCOUNTERS

The goal is to create a personal anarchive (network), made with Marcos Vidal Font's speculative fictions in the Moabit neighborhood. It all starts with walking. Font is looking for the Genius Loci in an unknown area completely different from his hometown. Overcoming the geographical, political, and historical discourses related to the area, Sensible Encounters explore the synchrony points between the common space and Font's personal expectations. One can follow his drifting, looking at the objects, collected in different spots. The prints and the ceramic casts are the traces of this dérive, and the maps are the drawings of a speculative net — project in dialogue with the curator María Morata.

The residency is supported by the Institut d'Estudis Balearics.

Seçil Yersel

PRE-ARCHIVAL ATTITUDE 1

What forms of archival attitudes we have? Where do we keep the memory? How and why do we construct narratives of the past? And more questions to be asked among the audience with the help of Yersel and fire.

Valérie Potvin

DISSOLUTION

During this Openhaus, Valérie Potvin will present a work that is part of her actual sculptural research to create a new art installation. She recently decided to go deeper in the exploration of the themes of gender, sexual violence and death. Through her creative process, in addition to the social themes she explores, Valérie pursues a quest for balance between a sculptural production and an ever-increasing ecological awareness. Valérie will use mostly natural materials and she will try to find a way in order to create a work that can be recycled or have a lower ecological footprint. Mainly, this work is conceived to be destroyed, transformed, recuperated and to do some experiments on matter that will lead to photographic and video documents which could be integrated in the installation or simply could become other projects. Different video devices will allow her to observe her own sculptures in the landscape, from the farthest possible distance, to a macroscopic or even microscopic proximity and to make films. The work of deconstruction and reconstruction of matter and forms will lead to hybrid and strange representations translating multiple layers of meaning and paradoxes on social topics.

The project is part of the culture program related to Canada’s Guest of Honour presentation at the Frankfurt Book Fair in 2020.

OBITUARI HASRAT KONKRET: RESIDU SEMU (OBITUARY OF CONCRETE DESIRE: PSEUDO RESIDUE)

We are now living when the revolution of science and technology on their optimal point, but as an individual or a society we can’t refuse to be a consumer creature. In line with the speed of technology development, network needs and human needs we—as a consumer society—leaves something we consume before as an obsolete object or ‘judged to be obsolete’ by themself. Thus, the obsolete object or object that judged to be obsolete are going to be abandoned, piled up and being our carbon foot print.

Gabriel Vallecillo Márquez

MONOLICHT

Monolicht is an artwork which depicts an accelerated view of our global climate crisis and our possible extinction. The monolith -an out of context object- “appears” in public space, shines light into the future before darkness falls onto us all.

STUDY LINES

Study Lines is a loop video about the process, not the result. It deems that every step of a production process are actually valuable on its own.
