Asha Bee Abraham - Die Insel

Asha Bee Abraham - Die Insel

The story of the city is written not by the historians or the travel bureaus. It is written and told as its people interact with its places through the simplicity of everyday life. We construct the sounds and the sights of the city with our busking and street art; We give it personality by exchanging smiles, stealing kisses and slamming car horns; We draw the lines on the map through our paths to work. Our stories build the city, brick by brick, paragraph by paragraph.

Die Insel is a 4-month participatory art and human ecology project. During the Ortstermin and ZK/U Openhaus, Die Insel maps, drawn by Moabit residents, will be exhibited alongside   an ongoing interactive mapping process. All attendees are encouraged to contribute by flag ging the places of significance and insignificance to them around Moabit.

Soundscapes from the city of Sao Paulo in Brazil have been recorded. The sound is deterritorialised, abstracted from its original ‘milieu’, reterritorialised and attached to the structure of the ephemeral construction built by the Australian architects of Studio OSK at ZK/U Berlin. An imaginary territory emerges through the layering of Sao Paulo, Berlin and the structure itself: a sonic Moiré pattern questioning borders.

Faisal Habibi

Faisal Habibi

During his residency at ZK/U Faisal Habibi continues researching his main theme of interest, namely the pattern of relation between human and the functional objects around them. His current concept of work, "Society of Sedentariness" refers to a society where people and their activities are dominated by the surrounding objects. Humans, who were originally the subjects in control slowly become the objects controlled by things with specific functions.

In this project Faisal Habibi uses common park benches that he found in parks and changes their form in order to create new forms of interaction with the audience.

Sheraz Khan - Notes on Texture 2 and Revolution Mechanism

Sheraz Khan - Notes on Texture 2 and Revolution Mechanism

Notes on Texture is part of Sheraz Khan’s ongoing investigation of the sensation of texture in Berlin. Sheraz provides his continuing ‘field notes’ on texture through sculptural and printed pieces as well as a reflection on the theme of revolution as part of the Ortstermin art festival in Moabit.

Studio Osk - Stadtumbau

Studio Osk - Stadtumbau

Studio Osk will be presenting a number of art and architectural collaborations, housed within a temporary pavilion. Referencing the global language of development, the structure will transform throughout the 5 days of its existence to accommodate a series of installations, performances and workshops. Studio Osk aims to interrogate what impacts global urban issues have on local conditions, and in particular how local communities can adapt to the ever transforming city.

Walker and Walker

Walker and Walker

We will be showing a number of works which address in various ways, the remnants of actions by individuals who challenge authority. Our work often revisits different periods throughout history in this instance the counter culture of the 1960s and the International Situationists. We are specifically interested in the relics or remnants of past efforts, counter cultures or individuals, of people who believed in change, in looking at the often overlooked aspects (the reflection of a neon sign where one turns away from the physical presence of an object) or the neglected parts of words (the in-between space of letters in words such as ‘if’, ‘or’, ‘do’, ‘is’, and ‘to’). A recent work called “The Remnants of Love ( after Robert Indiana)’ is is a memorial of sorts yet it speaks of the incommensurability of memory. It consists of the metal offcuts of the negative spaces which surround the individual letters of Robert Indiana’s iconic LOVE sculpture, piled against a wall. Chaotic in its appearance, making concrete the necessary support to articulate the word which would have been previously discarded or unappreciated, left as a residue in a workshop.

Masaki Yada

Masaki Yada

Masaki Yada is an art theorist and practicing artist graduated with MA from Goldsmiths college London and St Martins college. This 3 day workshop focuses on three fascinating issues that are pertinent to many contemporary artists and theorists alike.

1: The first day of the workshop is about Post colonialism. Using Edward Said's classic Orientalism as a point of departure, further related issues will be discussed while inviting attendees to participate in the discussion.

2: The main theme of the second day is the aesthetics. What is aesthetics? What is beauty? I will give a brief talk on Kantian aesthetics, then the discussion will unfold with the help of all attendees.

3: The third day of the workshop focuses on the philosophy of Gilles Deleuze. The word, "rhizome" has become a part of the lexicon of contemporary art, but who did coin it? Indeed, it first appeared in Deleuze's collaborative book with Felix Guattari, A Thousand Plateaus. So if you are interested in Deleuze's philosophy, please come along and let's talk about Deleuze!

The workshop is open to the public and the discussions will be held in a relaxed manner. Regardless of whether attendees are highly informed with the subjects or not, all attendees should feel free to participate without any pressure.
