Matthias Einhoff: From Roof to Boat: Collective Practice and the Politics of Scale

Talks on Curatorial Practice
09 OCTOBER 2026 / 17:00
ZK/U BerlinSiemensstr. 27, 10551, Berlin, Germany
Drawing on projects ranging from Haus der Statistik to Documenta 15's Raise the Roof! and the Kochi Muziris Biennale — how do roles within a collective evolve from organic collaboration toward more defined structures as an institution professionalizes? How do curatorial and artistic work increasingly blur, with infrastructure-building and the creation of platforms for other artists becoming an artistic practice in its own right?
The talk digs into the realities of sustaining an independent art space: a four-pillar funding model balancing public and private income, the pressures of funding cuts and the cultural lobbying required to counter them, and a deliberate refusal to let financial logic override social and cultural capital. It also turns to ZK/U's engagement with local governance bodies (Quartiersrat, Rat der Künste) as a way of grounding artistic work in the actual needs of a neighborhood, and to public space as a site of contradiction, marginalization, and juxtaposition — one that functions differently across cultural contexts. Throughout, working at increasing scale, especially on long-term urban development projects, shifts an artist's sense of responsibility from producing individual works toward shaping the conditions people will live in.
Matthias Einhoff is co-founder and director of ZK/U – Center for Art and Urbanistics (zku-berlin.org), an international hub for artistic practice and urban research based in a former railway depot in Berlin.
In 2022, ZK/U was among the 14 collectives invited to participate in documenta fifteen (documenta-fifteen.de), where projects such as Citizenship and BeeDAO explored collective authorship between humans and non-human agents. Building on this trajectory, current initiatives like Planetary Agencies, Commons Cosmodrome, and Convivial Commons expand ZK/U’s exploration of non-human representation, cultural infrastructures, and experimental governance in times of ecological and societal transition.
As a member of the artist collective KUNSTrePUBLIK (kunstrepublik.de), Einhoff has been working in the public sphere for more than two decades, using art as a tool to (re)activate social and spatial relations in divided urban contexts. The collective has realized site-specific projects in cities such as Jakarta, Lahore, Bangalore, Washington D.C., the Ruhr Area, Berlin, and beyond.
He is also co-founder of various platforms and publications, including cet-ka.net, citytoolbox.net, and Grounded Urban Practices (groundedurbanpractices.net).
Einhoff has taught as visiting professor and lecturer at institutions such as UdK Berlin, Kunsthochschule Kassel, and FHNW Basel.
