Kathrin Becker, KINDL – Centre for Contemporary Art
Talks on Curatorial Practice
After a decade as an independent curator and nearly two decades as the curator and head of the Video-Forum at the Neuer Berliner Kunstverein (n.b.k.), Kathrin Becker became the artistic director of the KINDL – Centre for Contemporary Art in Berlin-Neukölln in February 2020. In her upcoming talk, Becker will outline the initiatives she has implemented to shape the exhibition house’s identity. She will delve into the thematic orientation of the institution, highlighting the exhibition and discursive programmes she has developed for the KINDL. Given its location in the diverse and dynamic neighborhood of Berlin-Neukölln, another key focus of the institution is to reflect on its local context and locality and to explore ways to engage with the various communities in its surrounding.
Kathrin Becker is a curator and author based in Berlin, currently serving as the artistic director of the KINDL – Centre for Contemporary Art. She studied Art History and Slavic Studies at Ruhr University Bochum and State Leningrad University. Early in her curatorial career, informed by her experiences in cultural exchange between the Soviet Union and Western Europe in the 1990s, Becker developed a strong focus on intercultural issues. Her exhibition projects critically examined the redefinition of cultural concepts in both regions following the dissolution of political blocs, addressing national and regional influences as well as specific cultural-political contexts. Her work ultimately culminates in transnational themes within a global framework, exploring the role of visual art in society and the dynamics of exclusion and inclusion in contemporary cultures.
