In September, GÜTERMARKT isn’t just a place for trading, tinkering, eating, and chatting—it’s also a place for research. Our friends from Selbstgebaute Musik are coming to visit and will transform GÜTERMARKT into an open experimental space for sounds, instruments, and collaborative work. Here, people will build, experiment, discard ideas, explore new directions, and conduct musical research.
GÜTERMARKT will become a research station for the Selbstgebaute Musik Festival 2027. Amid homemade bicycles, meat salad, coffee, and cake, new instruments, collective compositions, and unexpected encounters will emerge.
As usual, you can stroll through the Gütermarkt, browse, join in, play along, and build instruments with Ronan Bonagamba; listen to collaborative silent-bike techno with Eigenklang; and loudly mourn the passing trains from the roof of the ZK/U.

Interaktive Upcycling-Musikinstrumente rund ums Rad
At our hands-on booth, you can try out unique musical instruments made from old bicycle parts. They were created in Benner’s workshop at the Haus der Materialisierung on Alexanderplatz, where not only are bicycles repaired, but new ideas sometimes also take shape from discarded materials. For example, a xylophone was created as part of a previous collaboration with the Hungarian group Bélaműhely. Whether it’s bells, spokes, chains, or rims, here bicycle parts are transformed into sounds. Stop by, experiment with the instruments, and discover just how creative upcycling can be.

BONADRUMS – Upcycling-Orchestra
In this interactive workshop, participants will create their own musical instruments using recycled and everyday materials. Together with Brazilian musician and percussionist Ronan Bonagamba, they’ll craft unique instruments—creative, sustainable, and lots of fun.
The workshop demonstrates how something special can be created from seemingly worthless materials and invites participants to rediscover the value of recycling. Along the way, it fosters creativity, a sense of community, and a mindful approach to resource use.
At the end, everyone will try out their homemade instruments together: Through rousing Brazilian rhythms and music from various cultures, participants will experience how many individual sounds come together to create a shared groove.
