In Extra tropical (arecaceae), the palm trees of the port of Brest remind us that they were already present during the Oligocene and contemplate, powerless, their exploitation by the agri-food industry to produce palm oil. They dream of a Europe that has become tropical again in the more or less near future. Extra tropical (yucca) focuses on the yuccas of the port of Lisbon and considers that these plants of American origin are the traces left by the intense journeys of the triangular trade. Extra tropical (hevea) centers the rubber trees of the port of Antwerp and its role in the exploitation of the former Belgian colonies in Africa, by the chemical and automotive industries for the rubber it produces. In Extra tropical (opuntia), the nopals of the port of Genoa tell us about their diffusion by maritime transport. Faced with the recent explosion of mass tourism and cruises, they dream of being refuge areas to face the ecological crisis.

Whoever finds me standing still, push me in the middle, was the phrase commonly seen written on the little wooden boats that migrant workers who left to the forest without knowing if they would ever return home used as a means of communication and an act of faith. The Ceará people in exile in the Amazon threw the boats into the river to pay promises made in moments of despair to São Francisco de Canindé. In the video, the artist reads a letter written by a woman who lived in the Amazon in the beginning of the XIX century, addressed directly to São Francisco, while we see her pushing a boat on the river. It denotes the desire to guarantee the memories flow in an explicit refusal to deletion, thus avoiding forthcoming shipwrecks.

This edition is curated by ZK/U Fellow Ziad Naitaddi. Ziad is a Moroccan visual artist whose practice explores “photographic exhumation,” a process that merges contemporary photography, sound, archives, and film footage to explore the hybrid space between documentary and fiction, offering alternative representations of exile and identity. His current projects, Birds Airlines and The Interdependence of Things, connect eco-scientific and historical reflection, drawing parallels between bird migration patterns and transatlantic fertilization between the Sahara and the Amazon to rethink the socio-political narratives of human migration and its enduring vitality.

Ziad’s work has been showcased at La Condition Publique (France, 2026), Fotogalerie Wien (Austria, 2024/25), MAXXI (Italy, 2024), Sharjah Biennale 17’ (UAE, 2027), 13th Dakar Biennale (Senegal, 2018), and the Center of Contemporary Photographic Art-Villa Pérochon (France, 2017/19), among others.
