MagiC Carpets – Melissa Rodrigues, CORONAS IN THE SKY, Not a Manifesto!

Das ZK/U – Zentrum für Kunst und Urbanistik in Berlin ist erfreut die Präsentation der neuen Auftragsarbeit mit dem Titel CORONAS IN THE SKY, Not a Manifesto! an essay on Afrofuturism and Liberation von Melissa Rodrigues bekannt zu geben. Die Fünf-Kanal-Videoinstallation wird während des OPEN PARK HAUS am 18.06.2020 im ZK/U Berlin prämieren und behandelt rassistische, geschlechtliche und soziale Ungleichungen in der Vergangenheit, Gegenwart und Zukunft mittels Poetik und Performance.

Die Künstlerin wurde im Rahmen der MagiC Carpets Plattform, die durch das Creative Europe Programm der Europäischen Union kofinanziert wird, zu einer Residenz ins ZK/U Berlin eingeladen. Aufgrund der derzeitigen Lage fand diese Residenz letztendlich in dem Zuhause der Künstlerin in Porto, Portugal und im digitalen Raum statt. Die Pandemie und die damit einhergehende Finanzkrise, sowie ihre Effekte auf die globalen Regime von Grenzen und Arbeit, als auch auf die Verletzlichkeiten marginalisierter Gruppen und den Widerstand gegen die Weiße Vorherrschaft sind in diese neue Videoperformance verwoben.

The ZK/U – Center for Art and Urbanistics in Berlin is delighted to announce the presentation of a newly commissioned artwork by Melissa Rodrigues called CORONAS IN THE SKY, Not a Manifesto! an essay on Afrofuturism and Liberation. The five channel video installation will be presented at the ZK/U OPEN PARK HAUS on June 18th, 2020 and explores themes of racial, gender and social inequality in the past, present and future employing poetics and performance. 

As part of the MagiC Carpets Platform co-funded by the Creative Europe Program of the European Union, the artist was invited for a residency at ZK/U Berlin, which moved to the digital realm and her home in Porto, Portugal due to the current situation. The pandemic, its financial crisis, and its effect on the global regimes of borders, labour, vulnerabilities of marginalized communities, and notions of white supremacy were woven into the new video performance.
