Yuna Park & Ki Seulki

(South Korea)

Ki Seulki • Yuna Park have been working collaboratively to visualize their questions on visual art itself, which they have had in their minds while working separately as a photographer (Ki Seulki) and as a painter (Yuna Park, http://2parkyuna.blogspot.com), through video. The artist team explores formal aesthetics and how various tendencies can be discovered from familiar image making. Based on their research, their practice attempts to reify fundamental questions of art and possibility of expressing stories of periphery.

Our recent exhibition "Gangaek: I can’t speak afterwards.” was about artists (creators), spectators (people who enjoy art), creation (intention and output) of artworks, and mutual understanding (communication) occurring among them.

During the opening of the exhibition, we received inquiries about the exhibition title; the "Guangaek (noun ‘spectators’ in Korean)" and “Eopsupnida (adverb ‘not’ in Korean)" which are spelled erroneously as "Gangaek" and "Eopeupnida." And it now leads us into another question of how easily and quickly current social customs can change although they came to practice not so long ago and dismiss the former traditions.

Berlin is one of the major cities where serious changes occur in short term while it tries to take care of the past such as the divided nation of East and West Germany. We would like produce video works based on the investigations of customs that have changed in Germany mostly before and after the unification and compare this with customs of Korean society which is still divided as North and South Korea.

Based on this project initialized at ZK/U, we want to continue applying the same subject in the cities of different countries. ‘Custom’ is a social and cultural phenomenon of a specific area, and a thorough prior research is required for sufficient understanding of the city. In addition, using the accumulated research and experiences from different projects in different areas, we plan to show various perspectives and distinctive characteristic through video.
