Gabriella Hirst

(Australia)

Gabriella Hirst is a cross-disciplinary artist whose works respond to fragility of memory and personal narrative, exploring myth-making and archival impulses as part of the human condition. Her practice is grounded in drawing, however her current methodology more frequently adopts sculptural and video media. She uses reactive and fragile materials such as crystallised salt, sugar, mechanical toys and fabrics in the actualisation of her works.

Born in Sydney, Gabriella completed a BFA at the College of Fine Arts in Sydney and the IUAV University in Venice in 2010. She received first class honours and the Emporio Armani touring exhibition prize in drawing at the National Art School in 2012, and has been awarded the Power Institute's 2013 Paris Cite Residency Prize and the Marten Bequest Travelling Scholarship in the category of painting for 2013-14.

Her stay at ZKU is jointly supported by the ArtStart initiative of the Australia Council and the Trust Foundation Australia.
