TURN2 Residencies Open Call

CALL FOR CURATORIAL RESEARCH RESIDENCIES IN BERLIN FOR EMERGING CURATORS AND CULTURAL PRACTITIONERS BASED ON THE AFRICAN CONTINENT

APPLY UNTIL 24 OCT. 2021

As part of the programme TURN2 - Artistic Co-Creation between Germany and African Countries, the Federal Cultural Foundation launched the TURN2 Residencies - Curatorial Research Residencies in Berlin, Lagos, Nairobi and Johannesburg in April 2021.

In September 2021, the open call for emerging curators based in the African continent coming to ZK/U Berlin goes into the second round. For curators based in Germany, there will be no second open call.

This call invites emerging curators in the contemporary visual arts or with a cross-disciplinary approach and cultural practitioners with a curatorial interest based in the African continent, to undertake a funded 3-month residency at ZK/U Berlin. The residencies will take place between April 2022 and December 2022 (exact dates to be finalised in consultation between the host and each selected candidate).

In the first round of the open call in April 2021, an expert jury selected six emerging curators from the African continent to conduct research at ZK/U Berlin between September 2021 and March 2022. Simultaneously, nine emerging curators from Germany were selected to conduct curatorial research in Lagos, Nairobi and Johannesburg.

Read more information on the selected candidates here

The TURN2 Residencies promote the initiation of curatorial partnerships and transcontinental networks between emerging curators and established art and cultural institutions as well as the exchange between the respective art scenes. The TURN2 Residencies are a joint project of the Kulturstiftung des Bundes (German Federal Cultural Foundation), the ZK/U Berlin and the Triangle Network, and are carried out in collaboration with the Nairobi Contemporary Art Institute (NCAI), the G.A.S. Foundation in Lagos and the Bag Factory in Johannesburg.

PARKomplex: A group of park lovers of the Moabiter Stadtgarten got together to found a collective between art and activism!

**English text below **

Eliza Goldox, Areej Hunt, Sylbee Kim, Sandy Becker, Alice Pedroletti, Jongbin Park, Jae-Pyung Park, Diana Righini, Luis Blacklaller, Andy Cavatorta, Dewen Kohshnaw, Muhammet Ali Satirer, Hassan Sweid und Las Shusha.

//

The newly formed collective PARKomplex hosted ZK/U’s good old format SPEISEKINO on 24 July, 2021. PARKomplex presented 9 short films questioning the public space as a surface of intimacy. The event took place on and around the Bauschilderung

The films shown were from 14 artists including ZK/U resident artists and the artists based in Moabit:
Eliza Goldox, Areej Hunt, Sylbee Kim, Sandy Becker, Alice Pedroletti, Jongbin Park, Jae-Pyung Park, Diana Righini, Luis Blacklaller, Andy Cavatorta, Dewen Kohshnaw, Muhammet Ali Satirer, Hassan Sweid and Las Shusha.

Besides films, there was barbeque performance by PARKomplex. With the performance, the collective was questioning who draws the line between legal and illegal public activities, as barbequeing is one of the most important and yet affordable commoning culture activity for many of the park users.

Start of Berlin-Lagos Residency

Arrival of Jere Ikongio

Despite the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Lagos-Berlin residency programme by the Goethe-Institut Nigeria together with the partners 16/16, Galerie Wedding, SAVVY Contemporary and ZK/U – Center for Art and Urbanistics can luckily continue. We are honoured to welcome Jere Ikongio to Berlin for his 3 months residency.

Jere Ikongio is an artist creating new media, interactive and immersive art projects. Based in Lagos, he deals with topics such as infrastructure, (hyper) identity and archiving. For this residency, he will continue his research on implicit bias on the protocols and politics of artificial intelligence art, exploring and investigating the role and processes of archiving and re-imagining existing archives.

"I am hoping to activate the post-internet and contemporary manifestations of archives and produce (a living) AI archive and program that is trained to construct ‘new’ art based on modern and contemporary art from West Africa."
