Haus der Statistik, Berlin 

Seit die Allianz bedrohter Berliner Atelierhäuser im September 2015 auf einem Banner am Berliner Haus der Statistik die Einrichtung eines Zentrums für soziokulturelle Zwecke verkündete, ist aus einer Kunstaktion Stadtpolitik geworden. Heute ist das leerstehende Haus der Statistik nahe dem Alexanderplatz ein einzigartiges Modellprojekt, in dem eine breite Koalition städtischer Akteure einen wegweisenden Stadtentwicklungsstandort definiert: Auf über 100.000 qm entsteht hier im Herzen der Stadt Raum für Kultur, Soziales, Bildung, bezahlbares Wohnen, ein neues Rathaus und Verwaltungsnutzungen. 

Als eine der ersten Pioniernutzungen untersucht STATISTA in zehn Aktionsfeldern, wie gemeinwohlorientierte Zusammenarbeit im Bereich der Stadtentwicklung gelingen kann, und entwirft künstlerische Prototypen für eine auf Gemeingütern basierende Stadtgesellschaft. Die ersten Ergebnisse der auf Langfristigkeit angelegten künstlerischen Arbeitsprozesse werden in den Veranstaltungen der STATISTA-Präsentationswoche vom 11. bis 16. September 2019 öffentlich sichtbar: von einer auf dem Wohlergehen von Bienen basierenden Kryptowährung über naturnahe Fassadengestaltung bis hin zu nachbarschaftlichen Kooperationen und einer internationalen Konferenz. Zwischennutzung führt hier nicht zu Gentrifizierung, sondern zu Verstetigung und einer Aufwertung im Interesse der Nutzer*innen von Stadt.

Die STATISTA-Präsentationswoche gipfelt in einer internationalen Konferenz mit unabhängigen Projekten, die den städtischen Raum und spezifische Nachbarschaften aktiv gestalten: Campus in Camps, Cercle d’Art des Travailleurs de Plantation Congolaise, Chto Delat, ExRotaprint, Khalil Sakakini Cultural Center, MACAO, Nachbarschaftsakademie Prinzessinnengärten, Planbude, ruangrupa. Im Zentrum der Konferenz steht die Frage nach einer Nachhaltigkeit künstlerisch-partizipativer Interventionen im öffentlichen Raum, auch für die konkreten Quartiere. Wie kann das Initial einer künstlerischen Geste in langfristige Perspektiven überführt werden?

In September 2015, a banner designed by the Allianz bedrohter Berliner Atelierhäuser (Berlin Alliance of Threatened Artist Studios) announced the establishment of a center for socio-cultural purposes at the Berlin Haus der Statistik (House of Statistics). An artistic intervention which has now turned into urban-political reality. Today, the Haus der Statistik, near Alexanderplatz, is a unique pilot project in which a broad coalition of urban actors are collectively developing a polyfunctional experiment. A good 100,000 square meters will offer space for culture, social work, education, affordable housing, a new town hall and administrative usage, in the very heart of the city. 

Being one of the first of many “pioneer usages” of the vast empty spaces of the Haus der Statistik, STATISTA is testing whether working in the spirit of the Commons is an option within today’s context of city development. With the aid of ten distinct playing fields, STATISTA generates artistic prototypes for a civil society built on collective principles. The first results of these long-term artistic working processes will be made publicly visible over the STATISTA Presentation Week from 11 – 16 September 2019; including neighbourhood initiatives, a cryptocurrency based on the wellbeing of bees, a facade design built for ecological inclusivity, and an international conference. In this case, temporary usage does not lead to gentrification but to a form of urban renewal that benefits the city users.

The presentation week culminates in an international conference featuring collectives working in a spirit comparable to bottom-up development: Campus in Camps, Cercle d’Art des Travailleurs de Plantation Congolaise, Chto Delat, ExRotaprint, Khalil Sakakini Cultural Center, MACAO, Nachbarschaftsakademie Prinzessinnengärten, Planbude, ruangrupa. Discussions revolve around long-term prospects for artistic-participatory interventions in public space as well as specific neighbourhoods. How can an initially artistic gesture be transformed into a long-term perspective?

Während der Klimawandel ungreifbar zu sein scheint, nirgendwo und überall zur gleichen Zeit, ist er mit allem und jedem verstrickt. Vor diesem Hintergrund initiiert die Jubiläumsinitiative MORE WORLD der Berliner Gazette einen kritischen Dialog. Ziel ist es, die Ursachen des Klimawandels durch Verflechtungen von Ökosystemen mit kommunalen, staatlichen und globalen Strukturen besser zu verstehen und zu erfassen – und letztlich Möglichkeiten zu erforschen, den Klimawandel aus solchen Zusammenhängen heraus anzugehen.

Die Berliner Gazette organisiert die 20. Ausgabe ihrer Jahrestagung: ein dreitägiges Programm mit Workshops, Performances und öffentlichen Vorträgen, das zwischen dem 10. und 12.10.2019 im ZK/U Berlin stattfinden wird.

Fighting Climate Change! MORE WORLD | Berliner Gazette’s 20th Anniversary Conference 

While climate change seems to be intangible, nowhere and everywhere at the same time, it is entangled with everything and everyone. Against this backdrop, the Berliner Gazette’s 20th anniversary initiative MORE WORLD stimulates a critical dialogue. The goal is to better understand and grasp the causes of climate change through entanglements of ecosystems with communal, state and global structures – and ultimately to explore possibilities to tackle climate change from within such interconnections.

To explore this, the Berliner Gazette will organize the 20th edition of its annual conference: a three-day programme with workshops, performances and public talks.
