Untersuchungsausschuss # 2: Heterotopische Orte

In englischer Sprache.

12. Januar 2019 | 10:00, ZK/U + Umgebung
In englischer Sprache.

Fact Finding Committee #2: Heterotopic Places
With the help of the Fact Finding Committee #2 (Untersuchungsausschuss #2; UA #2) the ZK/U is looking for heterotopic uses and places that are relevant for the 21st century and that can shape the future of the ZK/U. The subject of the research is described as "Spaces for Cultural and Social Production and Encounter in the 21st Century".
Lead: Martin Conrads

January 10, 2019 | 7 p.m., ZK/U
Lecture // Levente Polyák: "Look Out Forward: Future Scenarios for Civic Spaces"

In the past two decades, economic restructuring, austerity policies and repressive politics across Europe have joined forces to reduce space for independent culture and challenged cultural producers and social activists to build their own civic spaces. The fate of these spaces, however, depend on political support, legal agreements, economic conjuncture - as well as voluntary work, natural resources or an accessible and transparent digital sphere. How can we create future-proof civic spaces? What elements can guarantee the resilience and legitimacy of these spaces?
Levente Polyák is urban planner, researcher and policy adviser.
The lecture will be held in English.

January 12, 2019 | 10 a.m., ZK/U + Neighborhood
Inaugural Inspection ZK/U 2052
4 hours walk. Meeting point: In front of ZK/U, 10 a.m.

A speculative walk along the heterotopic fringes of the ZK/U in the year 2052.
Michel Foucault in his text “Of Other Spaces” describes real places “which are something like counter-sites, a kind of effectively enacted utopia in which the real sites, all the other real sites that can be found within the culture, are simultaneously represented, contested, and inverted”. He calls them heterotopias and gives examples of these spaces: prisons, cemeteries, ships, libraries… The ZK/U considers itself a heterotopic space of sorts. At the same time it is neighbouring other heterotopic spaces: prisons, cemeteries, ships, libraries …
The Fact Finding Committee # 2 invites to attend the inaugural inspection of a possible future ZK/U by walking along the heterotopic fringes of the ZK/U on February 29, 2052 (simulated on January 12, 2019 – or vice versa).
In English language.

19.01. // This Is A Film (1.3) - Präsentation von Chloë Bass

19. Januar 2019 | 18:00 - 20:00 Uhr, ZK/U, Konferenzraum

January 19, 2019 | 6:00 - 8:00 p.m., ZK/U, Conference Room
This Is A Film (1.3) is a lecture performance exploring what it means to turn footage into language. Using clips of family home movies found in various online archives, Chloë Bass creates a descriptive piece for the audience to hear and imagine. Where is the film: in the language? In the images that come into each listener's head? Is it shared between us? What do we see, and how does it make a story?

This Is A Film is part of Chloë Bass' ongoing project Obligation To Others Holds Me In My Place,  a study of intimacy at the scale of the immediate family. Previous projects have studied intimacy between a person and theirself (The Bureau of Self-Recognition, 2011 - 2013), and between partners (The Book of Everyday Instruction, 2015 - 2018).

31.01. // Gleis 69 – Erinnern an eine deutsche Familie

** English text below **
31. Januar 2019, 12:00 - 17:00 Uhr, ZK/U

In deutscher Sprache.

Track 69 – Recollecting a German family
A theater collage with documents of the persecuted

The memorial site on track 69, which is reminiscent of the Berlin deportation station Moabit, is opposite the Theodor Heuss Community School. The school sees itself as responsible for reasserting to each generation of students what happened in 1942/1943 in this place during National Socialism. Artists and friends of the Verein Tanz Theater Dialogues develop a special approach to this topic with a course of the 10th year - with theatrical means such as music, movement, stage objects, projections and photography - and present the result in the form of a play in the ZK/U, a former building of the freight station Moabit. The basis of the project are original certificates from private as well as official transmission of deportees. Letters will be read from members of a family, of which none was able to escape. An exhibition presents the photographic impressions of the young people during the process.

Book Release

Book Release: ‘Doing it together’ by Laura Sobral

Finding out how different urban actors can cooperate to improve life in big cities is certainly one of the challenges that we face today. The search for innovative models that allow symmetrical cooperation and partnership between citizens, institutions and public authorities is more and more intense.
Examples of co-governance tools existing in Lisbon, Bologna, and Madrid will be presented and discussed together with the Berlin context.
The book is an outcome of Laura Sobrals' research advocacy project as a German Chancellor Fellow with the Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung about tools for the co-governance of public spaces and strategies for inclusive neighborhood management.
Laura Sobral is an architect and urbanist that has been researching and organizing urban interventions and temporary projects in public spaces with the intent of fostering active citizenship by linking culture and city, being one of the co-founders of the Instituto A Cidade Precisa de Você [The City Needs You Institute], a São Paulo based CSO.
ZK/U was the host institution of Laura Sobral during her fellowship with the Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung.
