Das ZK/U – Zentrum für Kunst und Urbanistik ist ein Ausstellungsort der 10. Berlin Biennale für Zeitgenössische Kunst.

Die 10. Berlin Biennale für zeitgenössische Kunst findet vom 9. Juni bis 9. September 2018 unter dem Titel We don‘t need another hero in vier permanenten Ausstellungsorten statt: Akademie der Künste am Hanseatenweg, KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Volksbühne Pavillon und ZK/U – Zentrum für Kunst und Urbanistik. Das HAU Hebbel Am Ufer ist Schauplatz für zwei künstlerische Interventionen zur 10. Berlin Biennale.

Veranstaltungen im Rahmen des öffentlichen Programms I‘m not who you think I‘m not finden an diesen sowie an verschiedenen weiteren Orten in der Stadt statt. Die Ausstellungsorte sind nicht nur aufgrund ihrer historischen Bedeutung, sondern auch aufgrund dessen, was sie heute repräsentieren, ausgewählt worden. Die 10. Berlin Biennale begibt sich in Konversation mit diesen miteinander verbundenen zeitlichen Ebenen. Die eingeladenen Künstler*innen schlagen eine Neuverhandlung der an diesen Orten produzierten Systeme des Austauschs vor. Die gezeigten Arbeiten erweitern die Möglichkeiten eines solchen Austauschs durch eigene Ansätze und Überlegungen.

Die drei Direktoren und Gründer des ZK/U, Matthias Einhoff, Philip Horst und Harry Sachs, haben als Künstlerkollektiv KUNSTrePUBLIK bereits mit der 5. Berlin Biennale im Jahr 2008 kooperiert. Der von KUNSTrePUBLIK temporär eingerichtete Skulpturenpark Berlin_Zentrum – eine zuvor ungenutzte Brache an einem Abschnitt der ehemaligen Berliner Mauer im Herzen der Stadt und ein Objekt der Begierde für die Immobilienspekulation – diente damals als Ausstellungsort. Jetzt knüpft die 10. Berlin Biennale an den damaligen Dialog mit dem Kollektiv an und lädt mehrere Künstler*innen zu längeren Arbeitsaufenthalten in den zum Residenzprogramm des ZK/U gehörenden Ateliers ein. Die Beteiligten gehen der Frage nach, wie ihre politisierten Körper auf die Machtsysteme reagieren, die der städtischen Architektur inhärent sind. Andere Projekte untersuchen verschiedene gedankliche Schemata natürlicher und gebauter Umgebung in Gegenwart und Vergangenheit.

ZK/U – Center for Art and Urbanistics is a venue of the 10. Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art.

 The 10th Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art titled We don’t need another hero takes place from June 9 to September 9, 2018 at four permanent exhibition venues: Akademie der Künste at Hanseatenweg, KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Volksbühne Pavilion, and ZK/U – Center for Art and Urbanistics. HAU Hebbel Am Ufer serves as a site for two  performances over the course of the 10th Berlin Biennale.

Events for the public program I’m not who you think I’m not are being held at these venues and at various other locations throughout the city. The exhibition venues were chosen not only because of their historic relevance in the city of Berlin but also because of what they represent today. The 10th Berlin Biennale situates itself in conversation with these interrelated timeframes. The invited artists propose a renegotiation of the systems of exchange produced within these venues. The presented works also expand the possibilities of exchange by introducing their own perspectives.

The three directors of the ZK/U – Center for Art and Urbanistics, Matthias Einhoff, Philip Horst und Harry Sachs cooperated as the artist collective KUNSTrePUBLIK with the 5th Berlin Biennale in 2008, in which their project Skulpturenpark Berlin_Zentrum also served as a venue. At the time the “park” was empty plot of land, a former part of the Berlin Wall in the heart of the city—and the object of intense real estate speculation. The 10th Berlin Biennale reestablishes a dialogue with the collective by inviting selected artists for extended stays in Berlin to work in the studio spaces that form part of ZK/U’s residency program. In their practices these artists investigate how their politicized bodies respond to the inherent systems of power that define the built city environment. Other projects critically examine varied imagined schemas for natural and constructed environments, both present-day and historic.

Hacking Urban Furniture

Bushaltestellen, City-Toiletten, Bänke, Mülleimer, Infoboards… Stadtmöblierung in Kombination mit Außenwerbung bestimmt seit mehr als 30 Jahren den öffentlichen Raum von Metropolen. Die Ausstellung "Hacking Urban Furniture“ untersucht den bisherigen Umgang mit diesem Fakt und stellt ihn in Frage. Sie ist Teil des gleichnamigen mehrjährigen Forschungsprojekts und beschäftigt sich experimentell mit der Geschichte, Gegenwart und Zukunft von Stadtmobiliar (engl. ‘urban furniture’). KünstlerInnen, StadtforscherInnen, PolitikerInnen und AktivistInnen erforschen gemeinsam das Potential von neuen Konzepten öffentlicher Stadtmöblierung und präsentieren ihre Ergebnisse in Form von Kunstwerken, Performances, Workshops und Talks.

Teilnehmende KünstlerInnen und Künstlergruppen der „Hacking Urban Furniture“ Ausstellung sind: Markus Ambach, Christian Hasucha, Umschichten, Raumlabor und KUNSTrePUBLIK. Die vielschichtigen Projekte entstanden in Kooperation mit AbBA (Allianz bedrohter Berliner Atelierhäuser), Refunc, OpenBerlin und der Technischen Hochschule Wildau.

In der Ausstellung werden auch die GewinnerInnen und TeilnehmerInnen des Ideenwettbewerbs für neue Konzepte von Stadtmöblierung mit Ihren Arbeiten ausgestellt: Fiete Rhode & Team: KIEZding, Benoit Maubrey: Arena: a Speakers Sculpture, Andreas Templin: Berlin Dough, Extrapolation Factory: Transition Habitats, Josef- Matthias Printschler: WTHUF, Adam Page und Eva Hertzsch: V.I.P. Box.

Adam Page und Eva Hertzsch zeigen ihre Arbeit auf dem Freigelände des ZK/U, sie wird als Langzeitinstallation bis Ende Oktober in Aktion treten und war bereits Teil der documenta X in Kassel. Im Rahmen der vom Hauptstadtkulturfonds geförderten Ausstellung wird die "V.I.P.-Box" als “Case Study” im Rahmen des “Shared Cities: Creative Momentum (SCCM)” Programms einer breiten Öffentlichkeit vorgestellt. SCCM hat sich zum Ziel gesetzt, die Lebensqualität in europäischen Städten zu verbessern.

Als Gäste der Ausstellung präsentieren die Initiative “Berlin Werbefrei”, die werbefreien Städte Sao Paulo (Brasilien) und Grenoble (Frankreich) sowie Martin Binder mit seinem Projekt Safe&Urban ihre neuartigen Ideen und Konzepte in Form von Workshops und Dokumentationen. Das Adbusting- Kollektiv Dies Irae ist ebenso zu Gast und stellt sich der Öffentlichkeit vor. Parallel dazu berichtet Fred Dewey über die “Portable Polis”, die im Sommer des letzten Jahres als Hannah Arendt Working-Group grundsätzliche Fragen der Öffentlichkeit an den jeweiligen Orten verhandelte, an denen sie gezeigt wurde.

Vorgestellt werden auch die TeilnehmerInnen der begleitenden Forschungsgruppen: Laura Sobral, Benjamin Cope, Mary Dellenbaugh-Losse, Surfatial, Jan Bovelet, Joanne Pouzenc, Mobasher Niqui, Alireza Labeshka und Ali Reza Hemmat Boland.

Hacking Urban Furniture

Bus stops, city toilets, benches, trash cans, infoboards – Urban furniture and outdoor advertising has determined metropolitan public space for over 30 years. The exhibition 'Hacking Urban Furniture' examines previous interpretations of this relationship, offering new perspectives. The exhibition is part of the long term, eponymous researching project ‘Hacking Urban Furniture’ (HUF) which explores the history, past and future, of urban furniture. HUF is a collaboration between artists, urban explorers, administrators, politicians, activists and researchers exploring the potential of spatial public service design in the city and will present their research in the form of art works, performances, workshops and talks. 

Participating artists and artist groups are: Markus Ambach, Christian Hasucha, Umschichten, Raumlabor and KUNSTrePUBLIK. Projects have been realised in cooperation with AbBA (Alliance of Threatened Berlin Studio Houses), Refunc, OpenBerlin and Wildau Techincal College.

The following winners and participating artists and artist collectives of the idea contest for new urban furniture concepts will also participate in exhibiting work: Fiete Rhode & Team, KIEZding; Benoit Maubrey, Arena: a Speakers Sculpture; Andreas Templin, Berlin Dough; Extrapolation Factory, Transition Habitats; Josef- Matthias Printschler, WTHUF; Adam Page and Eva Hertzsch, V.I.P. Box.

Adam Page and Eva Hertzsch will show their work in the park surrounding ZK/U, which will fucntion as a long term installation until the end of October 2018. ‚V.I.P. Box’ was part of the documenta X, Kassel, 1997. The ‚V.I.P.-Box’ will be shown to the public as ‚Case Study’, within the framework of the ‚Shared Cities: Creative Momentum (SCCM)’ programme. SCCM aims to improve quality of life in European cities. 

Two guests will also present their work: Initiative ‚Berlin Werbefrei’ discusses advertisment free cities, such as Sao Paulo (Brazil) and Grenoble (France); Markus Binder from the UdK Berlin will also present his project Safe&Urban. Both will present their works and concepts through performance lectures, film screenings and documentation. Our third guest to be announced is the adbusting-collective Dies Irae. In addition, Fred Dewey will deliver the report 'Portable Polis', concerning a Hannah Arendt working group which toured last summer and addressed issues concerning the general public. 

The exhibition runs from 16 to 25 March 2018 at ZK/U – Center for Art and Urbanistics and is open daily from 12am to 8pm. 

The participants of the accompanying researching group are Laura Sobral, Benjamin Cope, Mary Dellenbaugh-Losse, Surfatial, Jan Bovelet, Joanne Pouzenc, Mobasher Niqui, Alireza Labeshka and Ali Reza Hemmat Boland and will also exhibit the findings of their research. 

The exhibition "Hacking Urban Furniture" is funded by Hauptstadtkulturfonds.  

An extensive accompanying programme, including guided tours, workshops and talks, aims to provide a more in depth view on the material on display.

reSITE Künstler*innen im ZK/U

Im März und April möchten wir die Zusammenarbeit mit unserem Partner reSITE aus Prag im “Shared Cities: Creative Momentum” Projekt vorstellen und heißen alle beteiligten Künstler*innen herzlich willkommen.

Die Kooperation zwischen reSITE und dem ZK/U wird sich in den nächsten zwei Monaten mit neuen Formen und Konzepten von Ausstellungen in den Bereichen Architektur, Urbanistik und dem Potential des Austausches in einer urbanisierten Welt auseinandersetzen. 

Die dazu teilnehmenden Künstler*innen Olga Labovkina, Lydia Karagiannaki, Lila Athanasiadou, Anastasia Eggers und Ottonie von Roeder werden in den nächsten zwei Monaten bei uns in der ZK/U Residenz wohnen und sind dazu eingeladen, an den ZK/U eigenen Formaten und Langzeitprojekten teilzunehmen und mitzuwirken.

reSITE artists at ZK/U

In March and April we want to announce the collaboration with reSITE, Prague-based ZK/U curatorial partner in the ‘Shared Cities: Creative Momentum’ project and welcome the nominated artists Olga Labovkina, Lydia Karagiannaki, Lila Athanasiadou, Anastasia Eggers and Ottonie von Roeder at the ZK/U Residency programme. 

The next two months will give the chance to explore new ways of exhibiting architecture, urbanism and the potential of sharing in the urbanized world.

Furthermore the residents are invited to use the ZK/U as a platform and to participate in the ZK/U own formats and long-term projects.

Conference: CyberParks Finals. Co-creation, big data, and the future of digitally enhanced public spaces

The final event of the COST Action TU1306 CyberParks: Fostering Knowledge about the Relationship between Information and Communication Technologies and Public Spaces is an international and interdisciplinary scientific conference that invites both scholars and practitioners to reflect on how information and communication technologies (ICT) re-configurate the production and use of public space(s). Thinking within the conceptual nexus between the notions of place, technology, and society, the CyberParks network reflects on the innovations, potentials, and productive patterns that ICTs are introducing to the design/creation, use, and management of public spaces.

In the conference, the results of the 4-years network will be discussed and paired with invited keynote lectures that address two issues of the CyberParks agenda in particular: firstly the conflict between data privacy/sovereignty and the institutional and/or private ownership of data and digital infrastructure under the paradigm of what has come to be called platform capitalism. And secondly, in accord with CyberParks' objective of fostering practical solutions, the implementation of networked e-mobilty in the infrastructural and public spaces of cities. On the second day there is a Pecha Kucha presentation of design projects addressing the relation between digital media and public spaces, and a workshop conducted with the Flussbad Berlin project.
