Newsletter 119 //October 2026

Also: Tee aufgießen, gemütlich machen, Kalender bereithalten. Der Herbst kann kommen – ihr bitte auch.

Wir freuen uns auf euch!

Dear neighbours, friends and visitors,

2026 is turning out to be our year of awards: after the DAM Preis at the beginning of the year, the structure holding it all up now gets its moment. Our extension receives the Sonderpreis des Deutschen Stahlbaues 2026! We’re celebrating with Peter Grundmann Architektur and everyone involved. And if you have another award, honour or distinction in mind, do put our name forward. We’ll be practising our look of humble surprise.

The structure is solid, and so is the programme: this October, FOOD & FOOTAGE takes us from the Rambo III filming locations in the Negev/Naqab desert straight to New York’s basketball courts, with shared dinners and the filmmakers joining us in person. Over four Fridays, Talks on Curatorial Practice opens up collective and feminist perspectives on art and culture. We make radio, discuss contested diversity at Contested Pluralities, and explore which boundaries are permeable to whom with the Martin Roth Initiative.

In between, MOAZIN celebrates its anniversary, bicycles change hands and dancing continues into the morning. At the end of the month, another jury takes over: the Berlin Cake Academy considers what form, substance and structural integrity can offer beyond architecture. Crumbs are encouraged.

All of which makes for a rather long newsletter. So: kettle on, get comfortable, calendar at the ready. Autumn is welcome – and so are you.

We look forward to seeing you!

CONTESTED PLURALITIES: CONFLICTIVE PRACTICES, POLITICS AND SPACES OF DE/PLURALIZATION

15.–16.10.2026

//

Social diversity is growing – while also facing restriction and resistance. The eighth international conference of Collaborative Research Centre 1265 “Re-Figuration of Spaces” examines these contradictions: how is coexistence negotiated spatially, who is excluded, and what does this mean for democracy?

Addressing public urban spaces, deportation and border regimes, and religious diversity, the conference brings together different research approaches and invites perspectives from culture and civil society.

DIFFUSION; A MEDDLING.

17.10.2026 / 18:00–01:00

//

Ideas, people, memories and aesthetic forms move across boundaries – but those boundaries are not equally permeable to everyone. The Martin Roth Initiative takes diffusion as the starting point for an evening about movement, participation and exclusion.

Curated by E. N. Mirembe and Zeynep Güzel, the evening brings together artistic contributions by former fellows across disciplines and contexts. Their works explore transitions, shifts and the possibilities that emerge through exchange.

FOOD & FOOTAGE: FREIPLATZ PRESENTS: DOIN’ IT IN THE PARK

21.10.2026 / ab 18:00

//

Who plays next is negotiated right on the sidelines. On New York’s basketball courts, players establish their own rules, rivalries and friendships – shaping a culture whose influence reaches far beyond the city. Bobbito Garcia and Kevin Couliau’s Doin’ It In The Park takes us inside this world of pickup basketball: spontaneous encounters, fiercely contested games and the question of what turns a public court into a shared place.

FREIPLATZ, the research initiative for ALBA BERLIN’s planned 28.15 Basketball Museum, brings that energy to ZK/U. We start with a dinner connected to the film before heading onto the courts on screen. Afterwards, director Kevin Couliau joins us in person for your questions and a conversation about basketball, urban space and the communities that grow between them.
