Liebe Nachbar:innen, Freund:innen und Besucher:innen,

bevor wir auf den anstehenden Monat schauen, zunächst eine kleine Rückschau: Im April wurde das ZK/U mit der ersten  Convivial Commons Assembly zum Experimentierraum — für neue Formen des Aushandelns, für ökologisch erweiterte Demokratie und für die Frage, wie Zusammenleben heute anders gedacht werden kann. Zwischen Gespräch, kollektiver Entscheidung und mehr-als-menschlichen Perspektiven entstand ein Abend, der vieles eher geöffnet als abgeschlossen hat. Auf der Projektseite findet ihr dazu auch einen Policy Brief mit weiterführenden Perspektiven auf ökologische Demokratie und mehr-als-menschliche Teilhabe.

Und nun in den Mai: Ein Monat, der wie kaum ein anderer daran erinnert, dass Stadt, Öffentlichkeit und Zusammenleben immer politisch sind — nicht nur auf Demonstrationen und in Parlamenten, sondern auch darin, wie Räume genutzt, geteilt und verteidigt werden. Im ZK/U zeigt sich das diesen Monat auf vielen Ebenen: zwischen Festival und Kiez, zwischen Spielplatz und Dachkonzert, zwischen Gesprächen zu Sudan, kuratorischer Praxis und gemeinsamen Lesekreisen, zwischen solidarischer Landwirtschaft, offenen Studios und sehr unterschiedlichen Formen von Mobilität auf zwei Rädern. So versammelt der Mai ein Programm, das Öffentlichkeit nicht einfach voraussetzt, sondern immer wieder neu herstellt — durch Begegnung, Aushandlung und gemeinsame Praxis.

Dear neighbours, friends and visitors,

before turning to the month ahead, a brief look back: in April, ZK/U became a space of experimentation through the first Convivial Commons Assembly — for new forms of negotiation, ecologically expanded democracy, and the question of how living together might be imagined differently today. Between conversation, collective decision-making, and more-than-human perspectives, the evening opened up more than it tried to resolve. The project page also includes a policy brief with further perspectives on ecological democracy and more-than-human participation.

And now to May: a month that, more than most, reminds us that city, publicness, and living together are always political — not only in demonstrations and parliaments, but also in how spaces are used, shared, and defended. At ZK/U, this takes shape on many levels this month: between festival and neighbourhood, between playground and rooftop concert, between conversations on Sudan, curatorial practice and shared reading, between community-supported agriculture, open studios, and very different forms of mobility on two wheels. May gathers a programme that does not simply assume publicness, but keeps producing it through encounter, negotiation, and shared practice.

Im Mai wird das ZK/U Teil von mowe – Festival für Kunst und Stadtkultur, das unter dem Jahresthema ICONS durch Moabit und Wedding führt. Über drei Tage hinweg verbindet das Festival künstlerische Positionen, urbane Praxis und queere Perspektiven — mit Ausstellungen, Workshops, Gesprächen, Spaziergängen, Fahrradtouren, Performances und Konzerten an rund 50 Orten im Stadtteil. 

Auch am ZK/U finden im Rahmen von mowe verschiedene Programmpunkte statt — auf dem Dach, im Haus und in direkter Verbindung zum Kiez. Ein Beispiel ist die Live Show: Apex Anima und FRZNTE am 9. Mai / 20:30–21:30, bei der experimenteller Pop, Electronica, Pole Dance und Visuals auf dem Dach des ZK/U zusammenkommen. In May, ZK/U becomes part of mowe – Festival for Art and Urban Culture, which moves through Moabit and Wedding under this year’s theme ICONS. Over the course of three days, the festival brings together artistic positions, urban practice, and queer perspectives through exhibitions, workshops, talks, walks, bike tours, performances, and concerts across around 50 locations in the neighbourhood. 

ZK/U itself will host several mowe programme points — on the roof, in the building, and in close connection to the surrounding neighbourhood. One example is Live Show: Apex Anima and FRZNTE on 9 May / 20:30–21:30, where experimental pop, electronica, pole dance, and visuals come together on the roof of ZK/U. Der Krieg im Sudan ist mehr als eine humanitäre Katastrophe: Er ist Ausdruck einer tiefen politischen Krise, geprägt von Militarisierung, autoritären Machtkämpfen und globalen Interessen. Internationale wie diasporische Debatten bleiben dabei oft verkürzt – zivile, demokratische und feministische Perspektiven werden marginalisiert oder überhört.

Building Sudan Narratives schafft einen Raum, in dem genau diese Stimmen sichtbar werden. Inmitten von Fragmentierung und Überforderung entstehen in der Diaspora neue Formen von Solidarität, Selbstorganisation und politischem Handeln – daran knüpft das Wochenende an.
Die Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung und der Sudan Club bringen Akteur*innen aus Politik, Zivilgesellschaft und sudanesischer Diaspora zusammen, um Perspektiven zu bündeln, Handlungsmöglichkeiten auszuloten und solidarische Praxis zu stärken.

The war in Sudan is more than a humanitarian catastrophe. It is the expression of a profound political crisis — shaped by militarisation, authoritarian power struggles, and global interests. Building Sudan Narratives creates space for perspectives that are too often sidelined in international debate: civilian, democratic, and feminist voices from Sudan and its diaspora.

Across two public days, the programme brings together participants from politics, civil society, and the Sudanese diaspora at ZK/U to speak about war, resistance, solidarity, and political responsibility — and to make visible narratives that resist simplification and erasure.

Der Spielplatz „Güterbahnhof“ in der Grünanlage neben dem ZK/U ist wieder da. Nach umfassender Neugestaltung ist der beliebte Ort seit Anfang April wieder geöffnet — mit inklusiven und barrierearmen Spielangeboten, entstanden auch auf Grundlage der Kinder- und Jugendbeteiligung des Kinder- und Jugendbüro Mitte. Besonders Kinder der Theodor-Heuss-Gemeinschaftsschule haben sich dabei als kreative und kritische Spielplatz-Expert:innen eingebracht. 

Am Samstag, den 9. Mai, wird der neu gestaltete Spielplatz gemeinsam mit den Bezirksstadträten Christopher Schrinerund Christoph Keller sowie dem Kinder- und Jugendbüro Mitte feierlich eröffnet. Kleine und große Nachbar:innen sind herzlich eingeladen, vorbeizukommen und den neuen alten Spielplatz gemeinsam einzuweihen.

The “Güterbahnhof” playground in the green space next to ZK/U is back. Following a comprehensive redesign, this well-loved local spot reopened in early April with inclusive and low-barrier play features, shaped in part through a children’s participation process led by the Kinder- und Jugendbüro Mitte. Children from Theodor-Heuss-Gemeinschaftsschule played a particularly active role in the process as creative and critical playground experts. 

On Saturday, 9 May, the redesigned playground will be officially opened in a small celebration together with district councillors Christopher Schriner and Christoph Keller and the Kinder- und Jugendbüro Mitte. Neighbours of all ages are warmly invited to join and celebrate the reopening of this renewed neighbourhood space. 

Im Mai lädt die OnCurating Academy Berlin zu zwei Gesprächen über kuratorische Praxis, Institutionen und künstlerische Öffentlichkeiten ein. Zu Gast sind Nabi Nara, Gründerin von SOMA Art Berlin, sowie Kathleen Reinhardt, Direktorin des Georg Kolbe Museum Berlin und Kuratorin des Deutschen Pavillons der Venedig Biennale 2026. Beide Termine richten den Blick darauf, wie kuratorische Arbeit heute auf gesellschaftliche Veränderungen, technologische Verschiebungen und institutionelle Verantwortung reagiert.

Nabi Nara spricht über die kuratorische Reihe Becoming Future, die weibliche Stimmen in technologiebasierter Kunst sichtbar macht und spekulative, gemeinschaftsorientierte Praktiken zwischen Kunst, Technologie und Aktivismus verhandelt. Im Zentrum steht dabei auch die Frage, wie sich inklusivere kulturelle Systeme durch kollektives Wissen, Care und neue technologische Werkzeuge mitdenken lassen.

KATHLEEN REINHARDT – LOOKING BACK WHILE MOVING FORWARD: TELLING IT ALL AGAIN, DIFFERENTLY
Kathleen Reinhardt gibt Einblicke in eine postsozialistisch und feministisch geprägte kuratorische Praxis und spricht über Sammlungen, institutionelle Narrative und ihre Arbeit für den Deutschen Pavillon der Venedig Biennale 2026. Dabei geht es auch darum, wie Museen mit krisenhafter Gegenwart, historischen Ausschlüssen und schwierigen institutionellen Erzählungen umgehen können.

In May, OnCurating Academy Berlin presents two conversations on curatorial practice, institutions, and artistic publicness. Guests are Nabi Nara, founder of SOMA Art Berlin, and Kathleen Reinhardt, director of the Georg Kolbe Museum Berlin and curator of the German Pavilion at the 2026 Venice Biennale. Both talks look at how curatorial work responds to social change, technological shifts, and institutional responsibility today.

In May, the final two sessions take place, closing the series with texts by Achille Mbembe, Theresa Hak Kyung Cha, and Kim Hyesoon. The group remains an open space for reading, thinking, and talking together about history, migration, and cultural memory.

For two days, Common Grounds turns ZK/U into a meeting point for national and international collaboration in the independent performing arts. The event is organised by Performing Arts Programm Berlin.
The first day takes the form of a symposium on the cultural-policy framework for collaboration in times of crisis, featuring keynote talks by Dan Thy Nguyen and Elena Polivtseva as well as conversations with representatives from networks such as C.Re.S.Co, eaipa, BFDK, ITI, and the Cultural and Creative Federation of the Czech Republic.
On the second day, the Berlin Performing Arts Market 2026 translates these questions into concrete encounters: under the motto “Show Your Art, Pitch Your Heart,” 15 Berlin-based artists and groups present their work alongside festivals, platforms, and networks such as Festival Off Avignon, Impulse Festival, Selected Works Festival, and WIPCOOP.

Mit FOOD & FOOTAGE verbindet das ZK/U zwei Dinge, die erstaunlich gut zusammenpassen: Film und gemeinsames Essen. Zu jedem Film wird ein passendes Dinner eigens kuratiert. Die Küche reagiert dabei auf Themen oder Kontexte der Filme – Essen wird Teil des Abends, nicht nur Begleitung.

Diese Ausgabe widmet sich solidarischer Landwirtschaft: Gezeigt wird der Dokumentarfilm Sharing the Harvest von Philipp Petruch, begleitet von einem Dinner mit frischen, regionalen Bio-Zutaten in Kooperation mit Ackerwesen und SoLaWi. Das Thema liegt dabei auch ganz nah am Haus: ZK/U ist Verteilstation für die SoLaWi in Moabit – und damit selbst Teil eines lokalen Netzwerks, das Ernährung, Verantwortung und Gemeinschaft anders organisiert.

Wie so oft bei FOOD & FOOTAGE beginnt der Abend also nicht erst auf der Leinwand, sondern schon am Tisch und im Gespräch.

With FOOD & FOOTAGE, ZK/U brings together two things that fit surprisingly well: film and shared food. For each screening, a corresponding dinner is specially curated. The kitchen responds to the themes or contexts of the films, making food part of the evening rather than just an accompaniment.

This edition is dedicated to community-supported agriculture: it features the documentary Sharing the Harvest by Philipp Petruch, accompanied by a dinner prepared with fresh, regional organic ingredients in cooperation with Ackerwesen and SoLaWi. The topic also connects directly to ZK/U’s everyday practice: ZK/U serves as a distribution point for SoLaWi in Moabit – and is therefore part of a local network that rethinks food, responsibility and community.

As so often with FOOD & FOOTAGE, the evening begins not only on screen, but already around the table and in conversation.

Parra for Cuva celebrates the release of Nacar with a release show at ZK/U, including a special guest, exclusive merch, and a vinyl signing. The afternoon is open to kids and families, creating a different atmosphere from the usual late concert format.

OPENHAUS gehört zu den zentralen Formaten im ZK/U. Artists in Residence öffnen ihre Studios und geben Einblicke in aktuelle Projekte. Besucher:innen können sich frei durch das Haus bewegen, Ateliers besuchen und mit Künstler:innen ins Gespräch kommen. Ein Abend für Prozesse, Installationen, Video und Performance — und für Einblicke in Arbeiten, die noch in Bewegung sind. Gerade darin liegt die Stärke des Formats: weniger fertige Ausstellung, mehr offener Moment des Teilens.

OPENHAUS is one of the core public formats at ZK/U. Artists in residence open their studios and share insights into their current work. Visitors are invited to move freely through the building, discover studios and speak directly with the artists. An evening of processes, conversations, installations, video, and performance — and of works still in motion. That is exactly what makes the format special: less finished exhibition, more open moment of sharing.

Zum Monatsende bringt das Mini Bike Fest Framebuilder, Bastler:innen, Zubehörmacher:innen und Mini-Bike-Enthusiast:innen im ZK/U zusammen. Auf dem Programm stehen Testfahrten, Spiele und eine Preisverleihung. Als DIY-Festival für Räder mit 20-Zoll-Reifen setzt es außerdem bewusst auf niedrige Hürden und eine offene, gemeinschaftliche Atmosphäre.

At the end of the month, Mini Bike Fest brings together frame builders, tinkerers, accessory makers, and mini bike enthusiasts at ZK/U. The programme includes test rides, games, and an award ceremony. As a DIY festival for bikes with 20-inch tyres, it also deliberately creates a low-threshold and communal atmosphere.
