Liebe Nachbar:innen, Freund:innen und Besucher:innen,

Der April kann vieles gleichzeitig: schon nach Frühling aussehen und sich trotzdem noch ein bisschen querstellen. Im ZK/U passt das ganz gut. Zwischen Kurzfilm und Kartoffelpuffer, Vorträgen über Antisemitismus und widersprüchliche Archive, gebrauchten Fahrrädern und einem neuen Assembly-Format, das zum gemeinsamen Nachdenken über demokratische Entscheidungsfindung einlädt, entsteht auch diesen Monat wieder ein Programm, das sich lieber in Bewegung hält, als sich zu schnell festzulegen.

Es wird geschaut, zugehört, diskutiert, gegessen, weitergedacht (und zwischendurch vielleicht schon kurz draußen gesessen?). Manche Abende beginnen am Tisch, andere mit einer Frage, wieder andere zwischen Marktständen und Werkstattwissen. Und wie so oft gilt: Am schönsten wird es meistens genau dort, wo man eigentlich nur kurz vorbeischauen wollte.

Wir freuen uns auf einen April voller Begegnungen, Reibung und offener Türen.

April tends to do several things at once: it can already look like spring while still putting up a bit of resistance. At ZK/U, that feels strangely fitting. Between short films and potato pancakes, lectures on antisemitism and awkward archives, second-hand bicycles, and a new assembly format inviting collective reflection on democratic decision-making, this month’s programme once again prefers movement over easy conclusions.

There will be watching, listening, discussing, eating, and thinking further (and, in between, maybe already a first longer moment outside?). Some evenings begin at the table, others with a question, and others somewhere between market stalls and workshop knowledge. As so often, the best moments tend to happen exactly when you thought you were only stopping by briefly.

We’re looking forward to an April full of encounters, friction, and open doors.

Wenn Film, Essen und politische Fragen zusammenkommen, entstehen oft die eigensinnigsten, schönsten und vielleicht auch widersprüchlichsten Abende. Genau darum geht es bei der nächsten Ausgabe von FOOD & FOOTAGE im ZK/U: Am 1. April 2026 zeigen wir unter dem Titel What Is Love When You … eine Auswahl der besten Kurzfilme des Vagrant Film Festival 2025 und laden zu einem Abend ein, der sich zwischen poetischer Verdichtung, gesellschaftlicher Reibung und gemeinsamem Essen bewegt.

Im Zentrum steht ein Filmprogramm, das sich mit den Zumutungen der Gegenwart beschäftigt, ohne sie glatt auszuerzählen. Die versammelten Kurzfilme fragen danach, was vom Einzelnen bleibt, wenn große Systeme, technologische Versprechen, politische Erzählungen und visuelle Überproduktion den Takt vorgeben. Sie erzählen von Krankheit und Erschöpfung, von Bildspeichern und digitalen Überläufen, von Krieg, Sprache, Arbeit, familiärer Gewalt, ökologischer Bedrohung und kolonialen Ordnungen. Immer wieder geht es um die Frage, wie sich Wahrnehmung, Widerstand und Fürsorge in einer Welt behaupten lassen, die uns gleichzeitig überfordert, beschleunigt und vereinzelt.

Die Filme des Abends bewegen sich zwischen Essay, Animation, experimentellem Kino, Satire und Video-Essay. Viele kommen ganz ohne oder mit nur minimalem Dialog aus und verlassen sich stattdessen auf Bilder, Rhythmen, Verschiebungen und Atmosphären. Gerade darin liegt ihre Kraft: Sie erklären nicht alles aus, sondern eröffnen Zwischenräume; für Unsicherheit, für Widerspruch, für Nachdenken und Assoziation.

Zu sehen sind unter anderem Swanlake von Stella Traub, ein poetischer Essay über Long Covid, Traumzustände und das Reich der Gesunden, Fotorevolte von Jule Körperich, in dem die globale Bilderflut endgültig kippt und digitale Speicherwelten die Realität verschlucken, sowie What Is Love When You von Finn Simard, ein experimenteller Film über traditionelles ökologisches Wissen und seine Beziehung zu Kolonialismus, Land und Genozid. Dazu kommen Arbeiten wie Dream Code, Invasive Species, Idyll, Trying to speak yet deciding not to, Comply, Dad went to the nightclub und Arbeit ist heilig — Sebastian der Saubere. Filme, die sich auf sehr unterschiedliche Weise mit den Rissen unserer Zeit beschäftigen.

Besonders freut uns, dass mit Poetry for Strangers auch eine Arbeit von Martin Stuart Krafft im Programm ist, der 2024 Resident im ZK/U war und während seiner Zeit hier an diesem Projekt gearbeitet hat. Der Video-Essay reflektiert ein Performance-Kunstprojekt, bei dem ein Gedicht von Rilke tausendmal an Fremde in ganz Berlin vorgetragen wurde und verbindet Fragen nach Öffentlichkeit, Intimität und Begegnung auf sehr eigene Weise. Kuratiert wird der Abend von Aliaksandr Martyniuk.

Wie immer bei FOOD & FOOTAGE gehört zum Film auch ein gemeinsames Essen. Denn der Abend beginnt nicht erst mit dem ersten Bild auf der Leinwand, sondern schon am Tisch: im Gespräch, im Ankommen, im Teilen. Für diese Ausgabe haben Aliaksandr Martyniuk, Valiantsina Martyniuk und Mihail Zagonski ein Menü zusammengestellt, das den Abend kulinarisch begleitet.

Serviert werden Kosmischer Borschtsch, ein herzhafter Kohl-Eintopf mit viel frischem Gemüse und Pilzen, optional ergänzt durch Canapés mit Hering oder Schmalz, dazu Draniki / Kartoffelpuffer und zum Abschluss Omas Kompott, ein nostalgisches Obstdessert.

Wer möchte, kann beim Dinner mitessen oder später nur zur Filmvorführung dazukommen. Am schönsten ist es aber, den Abend gemeinsam am Tisch zu beginnen und sich dann zusammen in dieses vielstimmige, eigensinnige Filmprogramm hineinzubegeben.

When film, food, and political questions come together, the result is often the most unruly, beautiful, and intense kind of evening. This is exactly the spirit of the next edition of FOOD & FOOTAGE at ZK/U: On April 1, 2026, under the title What Is Love When You …, we will present a selection of the best short films from Vagrant Film Festival 2025 and invite you to an evening moving between poetic condensation, social friction, and shared food.

At the centre of the programme is a series of films that engage with the pressures of the present without flattening them into easy explanations. The selected short films ask what remains of the individual when large systems, technological promises, political narratives, and visual overproduction begin to set the rhythm. They speak of illness and exhaustion, of image archives and digital overflow, of war, language, labour, domestic violence, ecological threat, and colonial structures. Again and again, they return to the question of how perception, resistance, and care can persist in a world that overwhelms, accelerates, and isolates us at the same time.

The films of the evening move between essay, animation, experimental cinema, satire, and video essay. Many of them use little or no dialogue, relying instead on image, rhythm, displacement, and atmosphere. That is precisely where their strength lies: they do not over-explain, but open spaces in between for uncertainty, contradiction, reflection, and association.

The programme includes Swanlake by Stella Traub, a poetic essay on Long Covid, dream states, and the realm of the healthy; Fotorevolte by Jule Körperich, in which the global flood of images finally tips over and digital storage worlds begin to swallow reality; and What Is Love When You by Finn Simard, an experimental short exploring traditional ecological knowledge and its relation to colonialism, land, and genocide. The evening also includes works such as Dream Code, Invasive Species, Idyll, Trying to speak yet deciding not to, Comply, Dad went to the nightclub, and Arbeit ist heilig — Sebastian der Saubere. Films that each in their own way trace the fractures of our time.

We are especially happy to include Poetry for Strangers by Martin Stuart Krafft, who was a ZK/U resident in 2024 and worked on this project during his time here. The video essay reflects on a performance art project in which a poem by Rilke was recited 1,000 times to strangers across Berlin, bringing together questions of public space, intimacy, and encounter in a striking way. The evening is curated by Aliaksandr Martyniuk. 

As always with FOOD & FOOTAGE, the films are accompanied by a shared dinner. The evening does not begin only with the first image on screen, but already at the table: in conversation, in arriving, in sharing. For this edition, Aliaksandr Martyniuk, Valiantsina Martyniuk, and Mihail Zagonski have prepared a menu to accompany the programme.

The menu includes Cosmic Borscht, a hearty cabbage stew with plenty of fresh vegetables and mushrooms, optionally accompanied by canapés with herring or lard, followed by Draniki / potato pancakes with toppings of your choice, and finally Grandma’s Compote, a nostalgic fruit dessert.

You can join for dinner or come later just for the screening, but the best way to experience the evening is to begin together at the table and then move together into this polyphonic and idiosyncratic film programme.

Die Vortragsreihe der OnCurating Academy Berlin widmet sich der kuratorischen Praxis und ihren gesellschaftlichen Kontexten. Sie bietet Raum für kritisches Denken, neue Perspektiven und gemeinsames Lernen. Im Mittelpunkt stehen Fragen danach, wie Ausstellungen, Archive und kulturelle Formate heute gedacht und gestaltet werden, und wie kuratorische Praxis auf politische, historische und institutionelle Spannungen reagiert.

Im April beschäftigen sich die beiden Veranstaltungen mit Antisemitismus als kultureller Technik sowie mit Archiven, die sich institutioneller Eindeutigkeit und ethischer Auflösung entziehen. Beide Abende fragen danach, wie Erinnerung, Ideologie und historische Gewalt in kulturellen Räumen fortwirken und welche Verantwortung kuratorische und ethnografische Praxis dabei übernimmt.

JONAS TINIUS – CURATING THE ARCHIVAL CITY. AWKWARDNESS AS METHOD

Wie lassen sich Archive kuratieren, deren Materialien institutionelle Rahmen und ethische Gewissheiten irritieren? Ausgehend vom Begriff des awkward archive fragt Jonas Tinius, wie Unbeholfenheit zu einer Methode werden kann, um mit Archiven umzugehen, die sich Klassifikation, Abschluss oder Erlösung entziehen. Anhand zweier Berliner Fallbeispiele untersucht der Vortrag, wie kuratorische und ethnografische Praxis mit Materialien umgehen kann, die von rassistischer, ideologischer und kolonialer Gewalt geprägt sind.

The lecture series by OnCurating Academy Berlin focuses on curatorial practice and its wider social contexts, creating space for critical thinking, new perspectives, and shared learning. It asks how exhibitions, archives, and cultural formats are conceived and shaped today — and how curatorial practice responds to political, historical, and institutional tensions.

In April, the two sessions engage with antisemitism as a cultural technique and with archives that resist institutional clarity and ethical closure. Both evenings explore how remembrance, ideology, and historical violence continue to shape cultural spaces — and what kinds of responsibility curatorial and ethnographic practice can take on in response.

JONAS TINIUS – CURATING THE ARCHIVAL CITY. AWKWARDNESS AS METHOD

How can archives be curated when their materials trouble institutional frameworks and ethical certainties? Drawing on the notion of the awkward archive, Jonas Tinius explores how awkwardness can become a method for engaging with archives that resist classification, closure, or redemption. Through two Berlin-based case studies, the lecture considers how curatorial and ethnographic practice can confront materials shaped by racial, ideological, and colonial violence.

Mit Assembly 01: Radical Democracy startet im ZK/U ein experimentelles neues Format, das die Nachbarschaft einlädt, miteinander ins Gespräch zu kommen und neue Formen demokratischer Entscheidungsfindung auszuprobieren. Im Zentrum steht die Frage, wie Teilhabe, Verantwortung und Zusammenleben heute anders gedacht und gemeinsam gestaltet werden können.

Ausgangspunkt ist die Idee radikaler Demokratie: Demokratie nicht als festen Zustand zu verstehen, sondern als fortlaufenden Prozess — geprägt von Beteiligung, Aushandlung, Widerspruch und der Bereitschaft, bestehende Strukturen immer wieder neu zu befragen. Die Assembly schafft dafür einen offenen Raum, in dem unterschiedliche Perspektiven zusammenkommen und neue Formen kollektiver Verhandlung erprobt werden können.
Inhaltlich knüpft der Abend an den Convivial Commons Congress an, eine künstlerische Installation, die ökologische Gerechtigkeit durch das Zusammenspiel von Kunst, Technologie und institutionellem Experiment untersucht. Davon ausgehend lädt die Assembly die Nachbarschaft des ZK/U dazu ein, gemeinsam darüber nachzudenken, wie demokratische Prozesse erweitert werden können — auch in Beziehung zu mehr-als-menschlichen Lebenswelten.

Der Abend verbindet Gespräch, gemeinsames Nachdenken und experimentelle Momente des Aushandelns. Zum Abschluss gibt es eine kuratierte Auswahl von Kurzfilmen, die sich mit mehr-als-menschlichen Perspektiven in Kunst und Kultur beschäftigen. Begleitet wird das Ganze von einem kulinarischen Konzept, das das produktive Spannungsverhältnis zwischen menschlichen Bedürfnissen und den Eigenrechten von Pflanzen aufgreift.

With Assembly 01: Radical Democracy, ZK/U launches an experimental new format that invites the neighbourhood to come together, exchange perspectives, and test new forms of democratic decision-making. At its centre is the question of how participation, responsibility, and living together might be reimagined and shaped collectively today.

The starting point is the idea of radical democracy: understanding democracy not as a fixed condition, but as an ongoing process — shaped by participation, negotiation, disagreement, and the willingness to question existing structures again and again. The assembly creates an open space in which different perspectives can meet and new forms of collective negotiation can be explored.
The evening builds on the Convivial Commons Congress, an art installation exploring ecological justice through the interplay of artistic, technological, and institutional experimentation. From there, the assembly invites the ZK/U neighbourhood to reflect together on how democratic processes can be expanded — also in relation to more-than-human worlds.

The programme combines conversation, collective reflection, and experimental moments of negotiation. It concludes with a curated selection of short films exploring more-than-human perspectives in arts and culture. The evening is accompanied by a culinary concept engaging with the productive tension between human needs and the inherent rights of plants.
