Es ist offiziell: Unser Haus ist ausgezeichnet. Der Ausbau des ZK/U wurde mit dem DAM Preis 2026 des Deutsches Architekturmuseum geehrt.
Was uns daran besonders freut: Dieser Preis würdigt nicht nur ein Gebäude. Er würdigt einen Prozess.

Seit 2019 haben uns Peter Grundmann Architekten durch eine Phase begleitet, die von Baustellenstaub, Improvisation und Visionen geprägt war. Von der Abnahme des Dachs — das als künstlerisches Projekt citizenship auf Reisen ging — über das Richtfest 2022 bis zur Eröffnung zur Berlin Art Week 2024 war der Ausbau nie nur eine bauliche Maßnahme. Er war ein gemeinsames Aushandeln: Wie bleibt ein Ort offen? Wie wächst ein Haus, ohne seine Geschichte zu überbauen?

Die Erweiterung knüpft bewusst am Bestand an. Die Spuren des ehemaligen Güterbahnhofs bleiben sichtbar — kein Bruch, sondern ein Weiterbauen im Dialog mit dem Vorhandenen. Gleichzeitig sind neue Räume entstanden: Studios, Begegnungsflächen, eine Dachterrasse, Orte für Diskurs und kollektive Praxis.

In einer Zeit, in der Architektur oft repräsentiert oder verwertet, verstehen wir diesen Preis als Anerkennung eines anderen Ansatzes: Architektur als Möglichkeitsraum und Infrastruktur für Gemeinschaft.

It’s official: our house has been awarded. The expansion of ZK/U has received the DAM Prize 2026 from the Deutsches Architekturmuseum.
What makes this especially meaningful to us is that the prize recognises more than a building. It recognises a process.

Since 2019, Peter Grundmann Architekten have accompanied us through a phase marked by construction dust, improvisation, and vision. From the removal of the roof — which travelled as the artistic project citizenship — to the topping-out ceremony in 2022 and the reopening during Berlin Art Week 2024, the expansion was never merely a structural intervention. It was a shared negotiation: How can a place remain open? How can a house grow without erasing its own history?

The extension consciously connects to the existing structure. Traces of the former freight depot remain visible — not a rupture, but a continuation in dialogue with what was already there. At the same time, new spaces have emerged: studios, gathering areas, a rooftop terrace, places for discourse and collective practice.

At a time when architecture often serves representation or commercialisation, we understand this prize as recognition of a different approach: architecture as a space of possibility and as infrastructure for community.

Im Rahmen der Kochi-Muziris Biennale zeigen wir eine Iteration von Convivial Commons. Der Convivial Commons Congress ist eine künstlerische Forschungsinstallation und ein spekulatives Governance-Experiment. Er untersucht, wie nicht-menschliche Akteur:innen mithilfe künstlicher Intelligenz an kollektiven Entscheidungsprozessen beteiligt werden können.
Fünf KI-basierte Assistenzen analysieren Umwelt- und Sensordaten sowie wissenschaftliche Modelle — nicht um über Natur zu sprechen, sondern um Entscheidungsprozesse räumlich und materiell erfahrbar zu machen. Verhandlung, Konflikt und Übereinstimmung werden in wahrnehmbare Prozesse übersetzt.

Aufbauend auf dem ZK/U-Projekt BeeDAO (documenta fifteen) fragt der Congress: Wie kann Teilhabe jenseits menschzentrierter Repräsentation aussehen?

Die erste Iteration entstand auf Einladung des Goethe-Institut Bangalore und der Plattform BeFantastic.
Die aktuelle Fassung in Kochi ist eine Weiterentwicklung im internationalen Austausch.

Dass ein in Moabit entwickeltes Commons-Modell im Kontext einer internationalen Biennale verhandelt wird, verstehen wir als Ermutigung: Fragen nach gemeinschaftlicher Verantwortung sind global.

At the Kochi-Muziris Biennale we present an iteration of Convivial Commons. The Convivial Commons Congress is an artistic research installation and speculative governance experiment exploring how non-human actors might participate in collective decision-making through artificial intelligence.
Five AI-based assistants analyse environmental and scientific data, rendering decision-making spatial and material.

Building on the ZK/U project BeeDAO (documenta fifteen), the Congress asks: What could participation look like beyond human-centred representation?

The first iteration was developed upon invitation by the Goethe-Institut Bangalore and the platform BeFantastic.
The current version in Kochi represents a further development shaped through international exchange.

That a commons model developed in Moabit is being negotiated within the context of an international biennial is deeply encouraging to us: questions of shared responsibility are global.
