Wir freuen uns nach über zehn Jahren zu einer neue Ausstellungsreihe im Skulpturenpark Berlin Zentrum einzuladen. An diesem Ort gründete sich 2006 KUNSTrePUBLIK und daraus ging das ZK/U hervor. Der Skulpturenpark Berlin Zentrum hat mittlerweile gigantische Skulpturen hervorgebracht. Man könnte behaupten, dass die neue Bebauung zu den weltweit voluminösesten Plastiken des 21. Jahrhunderts gehört.
Wir würden uns sehr freuen Dich wieder vor Ort zu begrüßen!

RE-TURN. Skulpturenpark Berlin_Zentrum 2021

Das Englische Wort “return” bedeutet sowohl Rückkehr, als auch Ertrag oder Gewinn. Diese Doppeldeutigkeit setzt inhaltlich und programmatisch den Ton für die diesjährige Ausstellungsreihe des Skulpturenpark Berlin_Zentrum. 

Das Künstlerkollektiv KUNSTrePUBLIK kehrt zurück aus dem in der Zwischenzeit aufgebauten Zentrum für Kunst und Urbanistik (ZK/U) zu einem Gebiet in der Mitte Berlins, das — nach großflächiger Zerstörung im II. Weltkrieg — Ost- von Westberlin als Mauerstreifen trennte. Nach der Wende blieb die innerstädtische Brachfläche zwischen Spittelmarkt und Moritzplatz viele Jahre ungenutzt. Seit 2006 behauptet sich diese mehr als 5 Hektar große Fläche als Skulpturenpark Berlin_Zentrum. Im Kontext von vier Ausstellungsreihen wurden bis 2010 rund 30 temporäre Kunstprojekte, diverse Diskursveranstaltungen und Publikationen realisiert. Von der besonderen Situation des Ortes ausgehend, beschäftigten sich diese mit dessen funktionalen, historischen, spekulativen und soziokulturellen Gegebenheiten.

Heute ist der Skulpturenpark Berlin_Zentrum fast gänzlich bebaut. Aus der Freifläche, auf der nur ein Haus stand, wurde ein Areal aus Neubauten mit nunmehr einer einzigen verbliebenen Brachfläche. Mit der Rückkehr greift KUNSTrePUBLIK die paradigmatischen Entwicklungen des Ortes auf und hinterfragt zugleich den gesamtgesellschaftlichen Effekt, den das neu bebaute Areal produziert. 

Rund 3000 neue Bewohner:innen leben nun auf dieser ehemaligen Mauerbrache, und nur die wenigstens wissen, dass sich ihre Wohnungen auf einem Skulpturenpark befinden und sie somit plastischer Teil einer übergeordneten Narration sind. Man könnte behaupten, dass die neue Bebauung zu den weltweit voluminösesten Plastiken des 21. Jahrhunderts gehört. Der Skulpturenpark Berlin_Zentrum hat sich zu einer Art „Museumsinsel“ entwickelt, auf der die neuen Bewohner:innen und deren Wohnwelten als zentrale Ausstellungsgegenstände in einem modellhaften zeitgenössischen Gesamtkunstwerk versammelt sind: eine soziale Plastik der Jetztzeit, verborgen hinter kulissenhaften Fassaden sogenannter Investorenarchitektur, wie sie an vielen Orten Berlins, aber auch weltweit, als gängige  raumgreifende Praxis zu finden ist. 

Die Ausstellungsreihe RE-TURN entwickelt sich über den Verlauf von fünf Monaten von August bis Dezember 2021. An drei Wochenenden - im August (21.-22.8.), September (25.-26.9.) und November (13.-14.11.) - finden programmatische Höhepunkte statt, an denen 12 neue Projekte initiiert werden und durch Workshops, Vorträge und Performances ergänzt und erweitert werden.

RE-TURN. Skulpturenpark Berlin_Zentrum 2021

“Return” can mean “to come back” as well as “profit” or “yield.” This dual meaning sets the tone in terms of content and program for this year’s exhibition series at Skulpturenpark Berlin_Zentrum. 

The artist collective KUNSTrePUBLIK, focused since 2012 on establishing its Center for Art and Urbanistics (ZK/U) in Moabit, now returns to an area in the center of Berlin, which was razed by bombing in World War II then—as a part of the “death strip” or “no man’s land” along the Berlin Wall—separated East and West Berlin during the Cold War era. Following the reunification of Germany in 1990, this inner-city wasteland between Spittelmarkt and Moritzplatz remained unused for many years. Since 2006, this area of more than 5 hectares has established itself as the Skulpturenpark Berlin_Zentrum. Until 2010 four exhibition series were realised here comprising around thirty temporary art projects, various discursive events, and accompanying publications. Each series took a fresh thematic angle on the functional, formal, historical, and sociocultural conditions of the site, in the light of its particular situation.

Today, the former Skulpturenpark Berlin_Zentrum is entirely built up, except for one small patch of wasteland. Only one house was still standing there in 2006, but the new development now houses around 3'000 residents. The return of KUNSTrePUBLIK sheds light on paradigmatic developments at the site and simultaneously examines the overall social impact of the new “residential quarter.” 

Today, only very few of the new residents on this former wasteland know that their apartments are located in a sculpture park and that they too are thus a sculptural component in an overarching narrative. One could argue that the new development is one of the world’s most voluminous twenty-first-century sculptures. The Skulpturenpark Berlin_Zentrum has evolved as a kind of “museum island,” on which the new residents and their lifescapes are assembled as the main exhibits in a model contemporary Gesamtkunstwerk: a social sculpture of the present day, hidden behind the stage-set-like facades of so-called investor architecture, such as can be found in many places in Berlin and worldwide. 

The RE-TURN exhibition series will unfold over the course of five months, from August to December 2021. Highlights are scheduled for three weekends—in August (Aug. 21–22), September (Sept. 25–26) and November (Nov. 13–14)—when new projects will be launched. The projects are accompanied and expanded upon through workshops, lectures and performances.
