Revisiting a Postcolonial Space – A Series of Films

Curator: Fatma Hendawy
Artist: Uriel Orlow and others
Menu: Koshari, a sweet, vegetarian dessert dish with rice and lentils, combined with Egyptian rice pudding

Curator and ZK/U resident Fatma Hendawy introduces an evening all about the topic of ‘Environmental Psychology’, a field that focuses on the interplay between individuals and their surroundings. She will show, among others, Uriel Orlow’s video ‘Lesseps’: In 1956, when President Nasser announced the nationalisation of the Suez Canal, the people immediately toppled the statue of Ferdinand de Lesseps, the French mastermind behind the colonial project of the Suez Canal. The plinth on which the statue stood in Port Said remained empty until 2011, when, after the Spring uprising, an Egyptian Flag was planted on it, a sign for the marriage of nationalism and revolution.
