OPENHAUS 21/05/2015

Is it sugar or salt? Let me know.

“If the young are not initiated into the village they will burn it down just to feel its warmth.”

– African proverb

For this Openhaus event, visitors are invited to enter the private communal spaces of the residency to discover a collectively-curated group exhibition organised by nine residents of ZK/U. The artists address the complexities and contradictions of communal living within the re-purposed train station that has become their temporary ‘home’: a location that was constructed for—and continues to serve as—a node of transition.

This project uses atypical exhibition strategies to examine the political structures and quotidian activities that comprise daily life at ZK/U. Here, the artists delve into the surfaces and interfaces (both real and personal as well as metaphorical) that define and guide their personal and artistic experiences within this shared zone.

Participating residents are: Steven Cottingham, Matthew Crookes, Saem Lee, Jonas Liveröd, Penny Harpham & Dave Sleswick, Michael Trommer, Julie Trudel, Byungseo Yoo

"Here!" A DIY Handbook to Communal Life at ZK/U

'To withhold the power to enjoy a harmonious communal life'* seems to involve lots of written instructions. In order to get a better understanding of the dos and don'ts at ZK/U, I made an inventory of the labels that are scattered in the shared spaces of the residency. *Quote from kitchen cleaning instructions. Unintended Unity

In the spirit of the communal concept of the Z/KU Groupshow, Swedish artist Jonas Liveröd is bringing his scandinavian traditional crafts into the mix and has collected and re-appropriated his fellow residents clothes and textiles and sewn it into a large, intimate patchwork flag.  It is a wonky and amateurishly folk arty, yet devoted take on the random community of a residence.

Tiny Kitchen

During their residency, Dave and Penny are exploring through performance, the properties of MUSIC and SOUND and the impact of the aural in our daily life - on our emotions, senses, memories - on our awareness of time and space.

In the context of OPENHAUS, Dave and Penny will present a durational exploration of the choreography of private, communal and performative spaces in relation to domestic movement extracted from co-existing in a shared-kitchen - with soundtracks provided by their neighbouring residents. How do we communicate and co-exist in a communal space, how do we transform and perform this domesticity for an audience in a public space, and how does the soundtrack change our perception of every individual moment?

Language learning practice: exercise 1

The weird overlap between language learning process and communal living is difficulties of understanding / making a definition of words that everyone uses.

Although it is almost impossible to get agreement on one concept of one word, we try to make a consensus on collective definition of words although it may always fail.

By using the exercises, one will become tandem partner to each other. The exercise will function as instruction of conversation and behavior in communal space.
