ARTIST DIS-PLACEMENT

Connecting artists to organizations from the non-art-sphere

The Idea of the Artist Dis-Placement program is to connect artists to organizations which are not situated in classical context of the art-sphere in order to reach a different engagement and an audience which is not naturally in contact with art. ZK/U aims to look at the ‘invisible’ communal services provided by a city. Through the Artist Dis-Placement the ZK/U is extending its actions to the central organizations of the cities infrastructure.

With this initiative, ZK/U aims to get an artistic overview on what makes a city what it is. By placing artists in organizations involved in a city’s functioning level, we wish to set up a framework for artists to research on the open field of public or semi-public services.

Artist Dis-Placement No. 1: Viktor Vejvoda at Berliner Stadtreinigung (BSR)
July - December 2016
In July 2016 Vikor Vjevoda started the first Artist Dis-Placement at the city’s waste management (Berliner Stadtreinigung BSR). Viktor is a Czech artist whose past work is already strongly connected to the subjects of re- and upcycling, waste and it’s reusage. During his placement he visited different departments of the BSR and eventually made the relationship between workers and administration a subject of discussion through developing an alternative way of communication.

Artist Dis-Placement No. 2: Alona Rodeh at Berliner Feuerwehr
September 2016 - September 2017
Accompanying the fire fighters  Alona’s focus laid on the training facilities and workout regime, the daily routines at the station, and fire control itself. After prolonging the placement to nearly a year, she developed multiple artistic outcomes together with different fire departments throughout Berlin.  The main projects along many smaller works were the publication FIRE and a short movie titled To the Moon and Back.

Artist Dis-Placement No. 3: Jan van Esch at Deutsches Rotes Kreuz Berlin
September 2016 - September 2017
Jan was placed in the DRK (German Red Cross, Berlin branch), a non for profit organization that works with volunteers. First he was specifically interested and wants to look into the diminishing interest of young people being active in older volunteering structures. After Jan prolonged the placement for six months, he developed different formats to make the work of the volunteers and the organization more visible. Through performances, exhibitions, events and the publication the RedZine he showed his interpretations of red cross’ work to the public as well as to volunteers and employees of the organization.

Artist Dis-Placement No. 4:
Victoria Tomaschko, a Berlin based photographer, is the fourth artist who is part of the Artist Dis-Placement Project at ZK/U. She is visiting the JVA for women in Berlin for six months.
For “The JVA for Women in Berlin and these who work with them” (working title) she is using a combination of writing (interview transcripts) and images (portraits). Tomashko is portraying women and men who work in prison and is particularly interested in how the prison environment impacts those who work there. For this project she visits all parts of the prison she is allowed to access, takes part in the daily routine and talks to inmates.

Artist Dis-Placement No. 5:
Ben Nathan spent six months at the metal recycling company TSR in Berlin. Through his project the Artist aims to gain an understanding into the recycling process of ferrous, household scrap and other more valuable types of metal. He is interested in the specialist processes and machinery used to transform the variety of metal that comes into the plant with a particular interest in the informal resource recovery or waste picker. It is the Artist’s method to gather this information through conversations, drawings, photos and videos made whilst on site. The work produced will be shared with site workers at TSR and those who deliver and dispatch material from the scrapyard.
His final film #Rita1931 can be watched here: vimeo.com/260130710

Artist Dis-Placement No. 6:
As part of the Artist Dis-Placement program, Oliver Walker will spend approximately five months at the Deutsche Bahn (DB), Germany’s nationally owned, though privately run, rail company. DB, ZKU and the artist have together agreed a completely open brief, meaning initially the artist will get a behind the scenes look into numerous aspects of the everyday running of the company, while also looking into historical archives and future plans - and exploring the network. Initial visits are in planning toa rail maintenance team, the Smart Cities team looking at the future of mobility in Hamburg, and a rail freight depot.

Artist Dis-Placement is Part of the EU Program Artecitya (30 Nov 2014 - 30 Dec 2018)
Within the context of a European cooperation program, KUNSTrePUBLIK, with the ZK/U, is interested in exploring urban communication structures and implementing experiments and projects that foster the conversation between diverse stakeholders in the urban arena. Artecitya, divided in its practical approach (Metapolis), and theoretical approach (Urbanities), is supported by the European Commission, and will bring together artists, architects, town planners and citizens to rethink the cities we live in.

The ZK/U particularly aims at (re)activating the social and spatial relationship between individuals and groups, that are divided by differences of education, income, gender and ethnical background.

ZK/U will therefore offer a variety of opportunities to create connections between individuals and institutions. We are particularly interested in launching activities that connect artists and local businesses, institutions and local initiatives.
The ZK/U has developed programs for the residents, that will allow them to connect to the local and social fabric and that trigger conversations between above mentioned.
The partners of Artecitya are Apollonia (Strasbourg-France), ARTos foundation (Nicosia-Cyprus), CCEA – Center for Central European Architecture (Prague-Czech Republik), Bellastock (Paris-France), Goethe Institute (Thessaloniki-Greece), Helexpo (Thessaloniki-Greece), (KUNSTrePUBLIK (Berlin-Germany), Laznia (Gdansk-Pologne), MoTA (Ljubljana-Slovenia)
