Roda Abdalle (b. 1993) is a Somali-Swedish artist and filmmaker whose practice encompasses a variety of media, with a focus on moving images, text and textiles. She is currently in her fourth year at the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm, her artistic research explores the intersections of geography, scent, space, and time. Lately she is particular interested in analogue film, especially shooting Super 8- and 16-mm formats, where she focuses on ecological developing processes, processing the film with herbs and leftover vegetables, which she believes give the film a unique texture and leave a distinct fingerprint on. This method, which she also applies to fabrics and recycled materials, is central to her practice, giving her work a unique texture. The role of language in her practice is fundamental, functioning as a passage to bridge to the past and the present and as a tool for mapping a search for materiality. Furthermore, Roda's practice challenges the very concept of space and the notion of pre-constructed scenes. She investigates the geographic specificity of a setting and explores the dual role of the camera, both as a performer and as a spectator. Another significant aspect of her research is performative, whereby the body is employed as an artistic medium.
