(Mozambique)
Kátia Manjate (Mozambique, 1984) is a dancer, choreographer, theatre maker, storyteller, and mother of two. Holding a degree in Theatre with a specialization in Dramaturgy and Stage Direction, her artistic practice moves between performance, dramaturgy, and social engagement. Her work often exists at the intersection of art and activism, addressing women’s rights, gender politics, social justice, and the political realities that shape everyday life.
She began her training in traditional Mozambican dance in 1994 and entered contemporary dance in 2003 through the 1st Choreographic Development Workshop organized by Culturarte (Mozambique) and Danças na Cidade (Portugal). She has further developed her practice through collaborations and training with artists including David Zambrano, Faustin Linyenkula, Olivier Dubois, Vera Mantero, Boyzie Cekwana, Panaibra Canda, among others.
Her first stage work, The Women Also Lost the War, marked the beginning of a career dedicated to questioning dominant narratives and amplifying marginalized voices. Her creations include CASA (2013–2016), Sexo (con)Sentido (2020), and Ballads of the Gods (2022–2023). She also collaborated on FRAGILAND (2016–2018) and LIFE IN NUMBERS (2019), and performed as an interpreter in KREISEN (2023).
In 2025, she worked as a facilitator on See My Story, Copyright by Madgerman with German sociologist Sabine Felber and began developing Rhythms of Freedom during a residency at Dance Limerick, Ireland. Her work continues to build bridges between ancestral knowledge, personal memory, collective history, and contemporary struggles for justice and freedom.
