During his residency at ZK/U, Peñarroyo began by creating images and animations of atypical material assemblies (of parts) that suggest atypical social assemblies (of people), showing that many other connections are possible within our digitally mediated world. He sees this ‘coming together’ of different elements as an initial way of thinking about solidarity — between people, and between people and their surroundings. His visualizations serve as the foundation for a project striving to reconfigure relations between landscapes, lifeforms, and technologies in order to encourage the formation of new digital habits that hold us accountable to one another and the environment. Underlying this project is a critical consciousness of digital culture's carbon impact and a conviction that struggles for digital justice and environmental justice are deeply interconnected.
