Gal Amiram was working on her project Where It All Began, and as part of her research, produced a photo-sonic-installation at ZK/U. In Where It All Began, Amiram focuses on four Jewish-lead archaeological excavations turned tourist attractions and a mosaic Museum in the Palestinian occupied territories: The City of David, Shiloh, Susiya, Nebi Samual, and The Good Samaritan Museum. The project looks into how these national parks give historical weight and moral force to Jewish claims over land. The site’s aesthetics—guided tours, simulations, and sounds—play a central role in telling an overwhelmingly selective story, one in which Jewish heritage is bound to the land of Palestine and other peoples’ histories are ignored, omitted, or made irrelevant. This project examines how settler’s ideology structures this mythological view of the “Holy Land’s” history and transmits it as a cultural memory to Israeli society.
