The Wall - Louis Porter

Louis Porter ( United Kingdom )

The Wall revisits and completes a project I began in Berlin in 2013. During the summer of that year I walked the route of the Berlin Wall, taking photographs and collecting objects, including photographic materials bought in the flea markets that now inhabit what was once the infamous “death strip”. I was looking for traces of The Wall as an idea, asking to what degree a past built on division and fear still haunted the present or perhaps the future.

Since then much has changed: a refugee crisis in Europe has spawned new walls, political populism erected others and a global pandemic has upended an already precarious sense European solidarity. For my project at ZK/U I will return to “death strip” and ask the same questions as before, but in light of seven turbulent years, in doing so I aim to create a palimpsest of historical present, pasts and futures.
