NEW COMMONS - Antoinette Yetunde Oni

Antoinette Yetunde Oni

Examining the adaptive nature of dispersed communities and typologies of architecture that accommodate places of ‘other’. The New Commons project aims to reflect on Berlin’s existing urban fabric all the while imagining and reimagining future landscapes bursting with revolutionary spaces that encourage the economic and cultural autonomy of communities. Currently, Dong Xuan Centre in East Berlin is a transformative cultural centre and commercial market ground demonstrating Michel Foucault’s description of Heterotopia; a place of ‘other’, with layers of history and meaning that have led to its existence. The focus of New Commons is to explore the porous nature of diaspora in comparison to the more rigid forms of grouping such as national borders in our current political climate.
