Der Geist der sozialen Utopien Wiens aus den 1970er Jahren ist im 23. Bezirk der Stadt noch immer lebendig, wo der Wohnpark Alterlaa als Österreichs größter Sozialwohnungskomplex emporragt. Entworfen vom Architekten Harry Glück, verkörpert er eine Vision des städtischen Lebens, in der Komfort und Gemeinschaft im Mittelpunkt stehen. Die Regisseurin wirft einen humorvollen Blick auf die überraschend glücklichen Bewohner dieser „Stadt in der Stadt”, Menschen aus der Mittel- und Arbeiterklasse, die ein komfortables Leben führen: Sie genießen das Sonnenbaden auf den Dachterrassenpools, gehen im nächsten Treppenhaus einkaufen oder nutzen Dienstleistungen, die das Leben außerhalb des Komplexes grau und unattraktiv machen. Als persönliches Loblied auf das Gebäude, in dem die Regisseurin selbst aufgewachsen ist, wird auch die dunkle Seite dieses Lebens durch eine farbenfrohe, nostalgische und beunruhigend idealistische Utopie offenbart.

Über den lokalen Kontext hinaus regt der Film zum Nachdenken über ein kooperatives Wohnmodell an, das heute so viele negative Assoziationen hervorruft, und ermöglicht Vergleiche mit der Wohnsituation in Polen, Österreich und Deutschland, wo die Modernisierung großer Gebäude derzeit ebenfalls gemischte Gefühle hervorruft.

Ein wichtiges Thema in den Geschichten ist die Gemeinschaft der über 70-Jährigen, die meisten Bewohner:innen von Alterlaa, die dank der Einkaufs-, Gesundheits-, Freizeit- und Grünflächeninfrastruktur des Komplexes aufblühen. In diesem Sinne wird Alterlaa zu einer lebendigen Fallstudie für „Long-Life-Design” und die Möglichkeiten der Architektur, nicht nur unsere Räume, sondern auch den Rhythmus des menschlichen Lebens zu gestalten.

Alexander Sandy Kaltenborn ist Kommunikationsdesigner, Künstler und Aktivist und engagiert sich unter anderem in der Mieter*innengemeinschaft Kotti & Co. Im Anschluss an den Film diskutiert er den Mangel an neuen architektonischen Utopien und die Wohnungskrise.

The spirit of Vienna’s 1970s social utopias is still alive in the city’s 23rd district, where Wohnpark Alterlaa rises as Austria’s largest social housing complex. Designed by architect Harry Glück, it embodies a vision of urban life where comfort and community are central. The director takes a humorous look at the surprisingly happy residents of this "city within a city”, middle and working class’ people living a comfortable life: enjoying sunbathing on rooftop pools, shopping in the next stairwell or using services that make life outside the complex gray and unattractive. As a personal song of praise for the building, where the director actually grew up, the dark side of this life is also revealed through a colorful, nostalgic and disturbingly idealistic utopia.

Beyond its local context, the film invites for reflection on a cooperative housing model that today evokes so many negative associations, enabling comparisons on the reality of housing in Poland, Austria and Germany, where modernization of large buildings are currently sparking mixed feelings as well.

An important theme in the stories is the community of people over 70, most of the residents of Artelaa, who thrive thanks to the shopping, healthcare, leisure and greenery infrastructures of the complex. In this sense, Alterlaa becomes a living case study of “long-life design” and the possibilities of architecture to shape not only our spaces but the rhythms of human life.

Alexander Sandy Kaltenborn is a communication designer, artist, and activist who among other projects is involved in the Kotti & Co. tenants' association. Following the film, he will discuss the lack of new architectural utopias and the housing crisis.
