At a moment when climate change is rendering vast regions of the earth uninhabitable, and space exploration is increasingly framed as the escape route, Learning from Deserts, a group exhibition opening summer 2027 at ZK/U Berlin, looks at deserts and deserted landscapes: vanishing water bodies, deserted cities, sinking islands, war-torn and abandoned tourist sites from across the globe and how they assemble into a single montage: a planet crossing into a new phase. From that point of angst, the exhibition pivots and turns to the knowledge of desert communities, expertise built over centuries, that has been systematically overlooked. Rather than treating survival in extreme environments as a problem for science and technology to solve, Learning from Deserts asks what desert dwellers already know that is relevant to our day and age?
