Eduardo Aquino’s work at ZK/U will concentrate on the indeterminacy of public space, using materials found in the public realm as the source of the work. Eduardo proposes to “manufacture paintings instead of painting them.” A metropolis like Berlin offers the human complexity associated with the anti-establishment culture to produce the necessary urban residue, materials used in this new body of work. Eduardo’s interest is in decorticating a new form of abstraction, no longer defined by the individual sentient intuition during the creation of the work, but instead defined by the indefiniteness, the accidental occurrences of public life, and the interventions of other actors in the process of making them. Another arm of the work is a “social infrastructure” project—a spatial device intended to develop a new relationship between art, public space, and the community by offering a new arrangement to facilitate social life. The work will be produced in response to observations and conversations within the community, collaboratively identifying a situation where a new work can be created.
