Manifested Belonging - Jesse Gerard

(c) Elisa Georgi, 2022

Jesse Gerard ( Tanzania )

Jesse’s project at ZKU was aiming to broaden the conversation around the position and agency of audiences outside the west and historical and current conditions set around their participation in the moving image industry.  His work examines the limit and politics of interpretative film experiences, ways of centering collaborative forms of film circulation and precedents for open ended, community based distribution practices — and he has also shared Ajabu Ajabu’s work with and around informal film culture in Tanzania. The time, research, and exchanges informed ‘Manifested Belonging’ an ongoing, interdisciplinary engagement by Ajabu Ajabu around the role of amateur practice, audience-led traditions, and anti-formality in remediating cultural dominance.
