#03 If under attack, how to react? Precarization / Self-Exploitation
A collective event by ZK/U’s Fact Finding Committee #03 (UA#03): Solidarity3 and artist Elena Mazzi (Magic Carpets)
ZK/U - Zentrum für Kunst und Urbanistik, Siemensstr. 27, 10551 Berlin
Free entry
For artists and cultural workers, the desire for self-fulfillment often results in self-exploitation, pushing the security of livelihood to the background. The conditions under which they work are precarious, as many people see art simply as a product, without recognizing the distinction between participatory art and art market. The precarious situation that artists and cultural workers find themselves in is frequently considered to be self-afflicted. All too often this results in a competition amongst the exploited for the few exhibition spaces and cultural budgets available.
In this event on the theme of ‘Precarization / Self-Exploitation’, participants explore how solidary art or artistic solidarity could function, and how this politicization influences conscious actions and claims of validity in the cultural sector. Alternative actions and strategies for the organization of a common labour struggle will be developed collectively during the workshops.
Programme:
18.00 h: doors open
18.30 h: time to connect, space to receive: a body warm-up to arrive to the workshop
19.00 h: plenary session with input to the workshops
19.45 h: break with food and drinks
20.00 h: workshops in German or English: #1 Organisational possibilities for cultural workers; #2 Activism, intersectionality and collectivity. Collectively finding ways out of precarity; #3 The artist, after all, is (not) working
21.30 h: collective conclusion with food and drinks
Fact Finding Committee #03 concerns itself with the focus point ‘Between Art, (Club) Culture and Resistant Structures’ and is conducted by Lena Fritsch, Larissa Krause, Thomas Lehnen and Michel Klaus Sperber. The project is sponsored by the Berlin Senate Department for Culture and Europe.
Elena Mazzi (*1984) lives in Venice, Italy. Her practice concerns the relationship between humans and their everyday environment. In her mostly anthropological approach she analyzes personal and collective identities in relation to specific places, and experiments with different forms of exchange and transformation. Elena Mazzi’s residency is part of the Magic Carpets platform that is co-funded by the European Union’s Creative Europe programme.
