OPENHAUS 14-15/09/2017

THE CHIMNEYS is part of a series made as a response to the Artist's experience exploring the UK power generating industry. It can be seen as a documentation of a defunct cooling tower in a hybrid state, between abandonment and demolition.

This video came after a number of trips to operating power stations in and around London. The concept of the project evolves from the idea of a self-organised placement, where the Artist actively wants to position himself within a wider social context. Historically the concept of an ‘artist placement’ emerged in London in the 1960s when The Artist Placement Group (APG) recognised the importance of locating Artists in otherwise inaccessible industrial locations.

historical and lurking private projections and subtexts. This usually

happens in collaboration with audiences who accidentally perform with her.

[Translate to Deutsch:] Gabrielle Senza

[Translate to Deutsch:] Gabrielle Senza’s research is focused on the phenomena of invisibility and how aspects of invisibility affect our lives. During Berlin Art Week, Senza will premier “ The Invisibility Lab” a mobile creative center where the phenomena of invisibility is studied and presented under the canopy of a pop-up tent. Visitors are invited to participate in the research experiments through multimedia participatory activities, exhibitions, and performances.

[Translate to Deutsch:] ‘Waschmaschine’ a 24 hour performance by Jan van Esch, as the finishing performance of the artist dis-placement residency at the Red Cross.

‘The tireless dedication, the ongoing enthusiasm and the limited visibility of the volunteers have impressed me. As modest Sisyphusses they roll  their self-selected stone again and again to the top of the mountain. 15 years or 18 years over 10.000 hours for free, do I have the stamina for 24 hours?’

[Translate to Deutsch:] She reworks found material and objects according to artistic methods related to metaphysical and linguistic ideas. Hermetic tradition and alchemy, with its processing and refining of material, has been a conceptual foundation for her methodology. Amongst the ideas that originate from linguistics, Deconstruction and Structuralism above all have informed her work.

[Translate to Deutsch:] ME:MORIAL is a art-research project which started in Aug 2017 focusing on the personal experience, of little pebbles, which ended up in DR. Stuhlmann´s shoes while walking. Overcoming the personal comfort zone by leaving those inside, he started to listen to them, a meditative medium, undertaking and pressure point. After the duration of 3 years, and a variety of stones collected in the surroundings neighborhood explorations of Berlin, ME:MORIAL attempts to offer a communicative platform to the pebbles.

PATAlympic Disciplines / POLLING BOOTH

DR. Stuhlmann is presenting a variety of disciplines of his ongoing project PATAlympia. The interactive installation, asks the guests "to be“ participant, or not "to be" voting on a variety of different pataphysical disciplines. The polling booth further serves as a „training station" for the upcoming elections in germany, everyone, no matter if old or young, anima cross animus.

[Translate to Deutsch:] We are framed into two frames. The internal identity through which we define ourselves to the others and the external frame which relates us to our societies. Can our identity depart from these frames and if so, what would it look like? In my photo booth, visitors are invited to dream, think, hope and imagine who they are outside of the frames while being framed through alternative image and sound techniques. Discover your alternate portrait.

[Translate to Deutsch:] The Port is a science fiction story based in the mundanities of everyday life in an art institution. During an artists' residency the narrator becomes curious about the goings on at the port offices that are visible from their window. This sparks a period of intense investigation into the history of the global supply chain and slowly they begin to notice something is amiss at the port. A sense of rising anxiety peaks when they discover that the port itself seems to be trying to communicate with them as if it were a living entity.

[Translate to Deutsch:] My works will be continued exploring my fundamental artistic question: Can clay bodies and ritual performance can function as coping mechanisms? My work seeks how the intimate material which is clay to inspire and negotiate public discourse around territory, displacement and form through my work, and emotional interaction with my audience in metaphorically.

In that way, the clay used is locally extracted from Berlin, mixed with material from my heritage that extending themes of territory and home found across my work.

Radiophonic transmission

For two months between Sep-Oct 'in-house' artist and radio producer Alex Head will develop a local FM frequency to explore, transmit and receive new knowledge from ZK/U Berlin.

Aspects of the experiences and material produced by this engagement will then be re-transmitted on 199 Radio, London, a station with which the artist habitually collaborates.

[Translate to Deutsch:] Through a binary of installations, we present impressions from our workshop in April on sensory experiences and microclimates, where we examined perception of space in urban environments. Here we are considering ways that microclimatic concepts could be contextualised via street furniture in order to change/challenge citizens’ perception of the immediate surroundings. The installations will be located across the street from the ZK/U grounds, at the green old-time pissoir.

We specifically recreate urban disorientation to examine questions around anxiety and gendered space usage, how these influence our experience of the city.

The workshop and the current installation are part of the Hacking Urban Furniture project.
