Kathryn Gohmert

Kathryn Gohmert’s work is transdisciplinary, engaging with cognitive science, ecology, and feminism through interactive installations, objects, musical instruments, paintings, video, and performance.

After being affected by temporary blindness, memory and mapping the brain’s processes have become increasingly important to the artist. Her work therefore highlights the power the mind plays in forming reality and seeks to initiate moments of interaction with the outside world.

Her installations, sound instruments, and objects draw individuals into intentional focus in the present, creating moments of connection and often inviting participation to activate the work.

Kathryn Gohmert was born in the U.S. in 1983. After receiving a BA in Studio Art from the University of Texas at Austin in 2007, she lived in Shanghai from 2008 to 2013, where she completed numerous projects through awards and project grants. In 2014 she moved to Berlin and in 2017 founded Gonzomechanics: an artist collective building new forms of thinking and behavior through interaction. In 2019 she received an MFA in “Public Art & New Artistic Strategies” from Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. She is now pursuing a doctorate in artistic research at Kunstuniversität Linz. She lives between Berlin and Weimar with projects divided between Germany, China and the U.S.
