Josephine Mead is an Australian visual artist and writer. Working through photography, sculpture and text, she employs feminist methodologies to investigate personal notions of support. Her recent work has considered how photography and writing can function as temporal markers; how the body can become a site of discursive practice; how female familial lineage can function as support-structure; and how poetic language can transgress different time periods. She has shown work in group exhibitions at a range of venues, including Counihan Gallery, Craft Victoria, Kings Artist-Run, Seventh Gallery, Blue Oyster Space (New Zealand) and as part of the Tomi Arts Festival (Japan). She has held solo exhibitions at TAB Gallery (Istanbul, Turkey), c3 contemporary art space, Bus Projects, Stockroom and the Monash and RMIT faculty galleries. In 2018 she undertook the Arquetopia Foundation Residency (Puebla, Mexico), the Kings Emerging Writer’s Program, the MacFarlane Fund Residency (Kyneton, Victoria), and was published by Art + Australia and un projects. In 2019 she was awarded an Australian Council Career Development Grant to undertake the Tasarim Bakkali TAB Residency (Istanbul, Turkey), and the Córtex Frontal Residency (Arraiolos, Portugal), and was awarded the ACP Most Critically Engaged Work Award at the Centre for Contemporary Photography.
