French-speaking Quebecer of Vietnamese origin, Jacqueline Hoang Nguyen is a research-based artist currently living and working in Montreal (CA) and Stockholm (SE). Using a broad range of mediums, her artistic practice is informed by feminist theory and in her work she investigates issues of historicity, collectivity, utopian politics, and multiculturalism. She aims to reveal the unnoticed political relevance of seemingly trivial historical anecdotes by shedding a unique light on stories deemed otherwise insignificant.
Nguyen recently completed the Whitney Independent Study Program (Studio 2010-2011), and obtained her MFA and a post-graduate diploma in Critical Studies at the Malmö Art Academy (2003-2005). She has been awarded a number of distinguished grants including the Stiftelsen Längmanska kulturfonden (2014); the Canada Council for the Arts (2010-2013); Brenda and Jamie Mackie Fellowships for Visual Artists from the Banff Centre (2012); The Swedish Arts Grants Committee's Intl Program for Visual Arts (2009, 2010, 2013); in addition to the Swedish Research and Development Fellowship in the Arts (2007). Amongst selected exhibitions, Nguyen’s work has been shown internationally in such venues as the Quebec City Biennial Manif d'Art (2014); A Space in Toronto (2014); Kunstverein Braunschweig in Germany (2013); Apexart in New York (2013); PAVED Arts in Saskatoon (2013); the ICA, Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia (2011); the Mason Gross Galleries in New Jersey (2011); the Galerie Im Regierungsviertel in Berlin (2010); Gasworks in London (2010); and Pictura Gallery/Skanska Konstmuseum in Lund (2009). In 2011 a site-specific sound piece was commissioned by CCSeven for The Woodland Cemetery, a Unesco World Heritage site in Stockholm.
