Esra is a Sudanese artist. Having migrated to several places due to tensions in her homeland, Sudan, her works are essentially open-ended questions and an attempt to answer them. Her works are queries of her memory – of life as she knew it and what could have beenoin, gg further to interrogate her current status as an artist in a “strange land.” Esra seeks to create a dialogue of social injustice and inequity.
Underlying themes of her work include despair, hope, introspection, the desire to belong and resilience. Esra has participated in residencies, group and solo shows including Identity, 2023 (Khartoum, Sudan). Her works are also in private collections in Ghana, Uganda and the Netherlands.
