Daniela Kostova

(Bulgaria)

Daniela Kostova is an interdisciplinary artist who examines hybrid cultures and architectures that emerge from conditions of global change and migration. Her personal narrative and background inform all of her work, which manifests itself in large-scale installations, including photography, sculpture and video. Daniela was born in Sofia, Bulgaria and currently lives in New York. She exhibits internationally, and is a co-director of the artist-run Radiator Gallery in New York.

Kostova's ongoing project has been to examine the phenomenon of "adventure playgrounds" and the politics of public space. Her recent show LOOSE questions what is safe and what is not in overprotective U.S. society by comparing American standards of childhood play with those of Kostova’s native Bulgaria. She examines how conquering fear through free play in the physical world may offer a therapeutic effect for children in a culture in which fear pervades.
