Austin Nortey is a Ghanaian artist originally from Kumasi, with roots in Osu, Greater Accra. His work emphasizes sustainability and second-hand textiles, exploring materiality, identity, labor, memory, and the interplay between human activity and the objects with which we interact.
Austin holds a First Class degree in Bachelor of Science Fashion Design from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. His commitment to his craft has led him to showcase his work both within Africa and internationally. Notable collaborations include a performance with a Burkina Faso-based theater production house in April 2022, a costume design partnership with a German artist, and an exhibition in Hamburg in 2022. He has also participated in the Paris Contemporary Art and Literary Exhibition in 2023, performed in "Silver Lining" with Barbara Gocníková at pIAR 2023, and exhibited at the Glam Fashion Africa Exhibition in Nigeria the same year. He participated in QUT | Tout commence par une interruption - Paris France. Additionally, he was honored as the First Runner-Up for the Vlisco Fashion Fund, a collaboration with the Netherlands-based textiles brand. Austin was in residency at perfocraze International Artist residency in 2024,Also participated in bone festival in Switzerland Bern in 2024, Chatting New routes of rebellion residency in 2024.
