August Christian Hoffmann’s current work explores sound and musical composition through processes of recording, fragmentation and digital recontextualization. His practice is concerned with how sounds shift through memory, repetition and mediation.
During his time at ZK/U, he will continue this research through the collection and transformation of sonic material, including voices, radio signals, resonances and incidental acoustic events. Through sampling and digital processing, these fragments are isolated, layered and reorganized into new compositional relationships. The project develops through an intuitive and process-based approach, moving between recording, editing and composition.
Rather than working towards a predetermined outcome, Hoffmann is interested in how sonic fragments can shift in meaning and function as they are removed from their original context and brought into new compositions.
