Hula Connection - Jin Jinjin

Back to the snow mountains

Jin Jinjin

During her residency, Jin plans to spend time each day in a natural setting, learning the Hawaiian hula (grass skirt dance) from scratch through self-paced video tutorials. The audience will be able to witness her entire learning process—the state she's in each day and the incremental progress she makes. Jin believes life is a process, and her artistic practice emphasizes the fullness and intensity of that process. She will adopt an inward-growing creative approach, returning to an intensely personal, bodily experience. At the end of the residency, Jin will present an improvised dance performance.

Hula is a folk dance deeply connected to nature. Its costumes are often woven from natural plants, and its style is primal and vibrant. In her learning, Jin does not pursue standardized movements; instead, she will use hula's gestures and rhythms as a "point of entry" to connect her body with the environment. During her time in Berlin, the new natural surroundings will act upon her. I will be a vessel through which this period of time naturally flows. The entire residency itself is a "spacetime that has been made visible through the body."
