What the heck is Climate Justice? - Lena Wegmann, Black Earth

OPENHAUS May 2023 (c) Elisa Georgi, 2023

Lena Wegmann , Black Earth

What the heck is Climate Justice? is about creating a tangible discourse and awareness on the topic of Climate Justice with the community surrounding ZK/U in Berlin Moabit and Wedding. The project seeks to interview people on the street, in local stores and/or in existing community initiatives mainly addressing Black, Indigenous and People of Color.

Making contact begins by addressing BIPoC neighbours about their understanding of and connection to Climate Justice, with simple questions as to what they understand as climate justice and who they see contributing to it (or not) in their neighbourhood. In conversation, Black Earth shares and discusses their understanding of Climate Justice - an umbrella term for a number of social and human rights initiatives that seek to increase and maintain wellbeing in a world shaped by the climate crisis. This includes housing, economic justice, food justice, migration and asylum rights, etc. and how the communities even in Moabit and/or Wedding are directly affected by it in terms of gentrification, racism, rent increase and /or inflation.

Working on Climate Justice can be understood as practice of urban care taking. Documented by filmed interviews and written statements it connects with new people and discusses what the concept means in daily life. Furthermore the project questions, what kind of social spaces we create and support as climate just and safer spaces for communities. For BIPoC community members who have taken part in the project, discussions and gatherings to grow broader approaches on equity and actively set up protocols to practice Climate Justice on eye level.

What the heck is Climate Justice? is a call to to leave exclusive eurocentric paths of knowledge production, participate in climate repair and take care: The aim is creating awareness and community connection - because the climate crisis needs all of us!
